CNN: Lewis Black demands CNN banner disappear

RAW STORY
Published: Wednesday July 12, 2006

During an interview on CNN, comedian Lewis Black complained about CNN's overuse of banners and tickers. All of the 24 hour news networks use similar banners and news tickers which prevents the viewer from seeing the about 1/4 of the primary video.

Interrupting his interview with CNN's Miles O'Brien and looking toward backstage, Black demanded, "You guys -- and let me just say this to CNN -- you guys have got have got to start take the thing off the bottom of the page. Take the words off the bottom of the screen! There are people talking here."

CNN promptly removed the banner and the ticker from the screen for the remainder of Black's interview.

2. That's great!
I hate all the screen real estate taken up with non-relevant shit.

And I especially hate the newscrawlers, because invariably I catch only the last half of something that's scrolling and it's maddening and irritating.

5. He appears frequently on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
in a segment called "Back in Black."

I saw him live at the Fillmore here in SF last year. He was fabulous.

6. He's a very angry, left-wing comedian.
Which makes him good in my book! He's famous for his angry Daily Show "Back In Black" segment, and some very creative uses of the word "fuck".

I suggest picking up his most recent disc called "The Carnegie Hall Performance" to get a good idea of what his comedy is like.

4. Actually, the ticker is usually the only "real" news! The talking
heads are the ones babbling nonsense!

8. Then they ought to get rid of the talking heads and just let people
read the news. That sort of presentation of information is the ultimate in info-tainment overload.

:(

10. I agree IndyOp,
reading the ticker, I end up missing too much of the interview, if I want to read, I'll buy the paper.

17. Just let people read the news
In a nice, easily scanned format maybe. And a TV screen is too ethereal; it should be printed out on paper, particularly for those of us with macular degeneration who can't see images on a CRT. And come out with a new one every day. It could still be supported by ads, I suppose, but those would have to be printed, too.

I just had a great idea! I'll call it a "paper of news"!

25. A 'newspaper'? What a novel idea! I actually prefer
the moving text though. Movement 'grabs' attention and I am just a tad ADD so the moving text keeps my focus more than text on a page. My ideal would be scrolling text that I can control - using my mouse, perhaps?

I don't subscribe to the newspaper because I hate to have the trees killed when I know I won't read much of it. I also avoid newspapers because I prefer the alternative news I can read online.

7. Dayum! Good job! It became almost bearable to watch when the
ticker was turned off. I still feel nauseated by the constantly moving words and images on the screen behind their heads. The combination of the two: :puke:

I gave up TV about 5 years ago - and I cannot tolerate looking at most shows now. The barrage of information is just sickening.

12. Best interview O'Brien's done in a while, but
was that the most creative "hook" he could come up with? -"He's here to sell a book"? Tactful, Miles.

When are we going to see elected Democrats challenge the media to their faces like comedians do?

22. Way to go! I HATE those things. And the little pop-up ads for other shows
that are always coming on , just about every channel these days...

I HATE them. Particularly when you are watching something with subtitles, half the time the damn pop-up ads cover them up. Pisses me off.
And I also hate the sound effects; Fox (naturally) is about the worst offender. Sports in particular; they have a little graphic thing with the most annoying sounds attached to it...
