House Approves Renewal of Voting Rights Act

By RAYMOND HERNANDEZ
Published: July 14, 2006

WASHINGTON, July 13 — The House voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to renew expiring provisions of the Voting Rights Act after supporters of it defeated challenges mounted by conservative opponents.

The 390-to-33 vote on the landmark civil rights act capped a day of impassioned debate that heightened the politically charged atmosphere surrounding race and ethnicity, already aggravated by the recent fight in Congress over immigration.

In urging adoption of the act, Representative John Lewis, Democrat of Georgia, recalled marching on Bloody Sunday, a turning point in the movement for black voting rights in 1965, when the police in Selma, Ala., beat 600 civil rights demonstrators.

“I gave blood,” Mr. Lewis said, his voice rising, as he stood alongside photographs of the clash. “Some of my colleagues gave their very lives.”

“Yes, we’ve made some progress; we have come a distance,” he added. “The sad truth is, discrimination still exists. That’s why we still need the Voting Rights Act, and we must not go back to the dark past."

1. Because they have their Klan hats in their closets..
I heard that many of the Southern states were upset that they still have to be monitored by the Government during elections....their claim was there is no reason for the oversight because racism at the polls don't exist anymore...

4. That's right
The republican party is made up of mostly racists and bigots. That's why they've got (just about) ALL the redneck votes.

5. They must be up for re election
in predominantly white upper class racist districts.

I recognize some of these names from conservative wealthy CA districts. Pretty much says it all.

They want to keep their jobs.

16. It doesn't have to be
so blatant as Klansmen and white hoods. The spin is much subtler. The Voting Rights Act can be spun as some kind of preferential treatment. Don't want any of that now do we?

He's going to win soundly, and bring decorum with a Democratic majority from Colorado to a US Democratic Majority in the US!

37. Remember that Ron Paul is a Libertarian
that couldn't get elected as such so he ran as a Republican. Ron Paul is also right on a lot of things that we favor. But probably as much as he is wrong on some things.

24. Exactly. Diebold & HAVA opened a door to election fraud for the GOP.
They had to have those ammendments and photo ID laws in order to fully implement their plan to supress the Democratic vote.

They are the ones pushing a voter ID law here in GA that will supress the poor, elderly and minority vote.

I was wondering if the Judge Westmoreland who ruled against the Voter ID law is related to congressman Lynn Westmoreland of Ten Commandment fame?

30. Not a lot of urban areas or
university towns in the 5th District.

My guess the population is very white without much exposure to diversity of skin, religion, etc.

Don't judge Iowa by the work of this moran, though. Iowa used to (and may still) have the highest literacy rate of the nation. Smart people live there who are unfortunately represented by this numbnutz... same as me, I have Hastert. :(

Jay Faucett has a excellent chance of taking Fundies to the bank and bringing ZERO Republicans Reps from Colorado (Yes, Angie Paccione also has an excellent chance of defeating the Bitch from Ft. Morgan) and Xenophobic Tancredo will be permanently retired to a nutjob minister that everyone ignores.

I mean, seriously, even representatives in the most racist districts could have quietly voted for the renewal without incident. Who would have known? Do KKK members watch C-Span?? But no--they decided to create a spectacle in a vote that should have been a slam dunk, unanimous decision. What's worse is that over 18% of the 'Nos' came from Georgia!

The most powerful democracy in the world has
the most corrupt voting system.

God help us all if you can't turn this around.

We're lucky up here. We have a paper ballot and
elections cannot be manipulated by politicians,
either federal or provincial.
