Soledad and other hairdos on CNN talking about how cheap gas is.
"Cheaper that a Latte".

I guess if I made six or seven figures I could pretend that gas was cheap too.

6. Soledad should read this on the Hidden Cost of Oil
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 08:19 AM by TayTay
This is from testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on March 30, 2006. This was part os a series of hearings that Chairman Lugar has been holding this year about the real costs of oil. The following comes from the prepared testimony of MILTON R. COPULOS PRESIDENT, NATIONAL DEFENSE COUNCIL FOUNDATION, archived at the SFRC site at: http://foreign.senate.gov/hearings/2006/hrg060330a.html

So, where does that leave us?

In 2003, as noted, we estimated that the “hidden cost” of imported oil totaled $304.9
billion. When we revisited the external costs, taking into account the higher prices for
crude oil and increased defense expenditures we found that the “hidden cost” had
skyrocketed to $779.5 billion in 2005. That would be equivalent to adding $4.10 to the
price of a gallon of gasoline if amortized over the total volume of imports. For Persian
Gulf imports, because of the enormous military costs associated with the region, the
“hidden cost” was equal to adding $7.41 cents to the price of a gallon of gasoline. When
the nominal cost is combined with this figure it yields a “true” cost of $9.53 per gallon,
but that is just the start.

Because the price of crude oil is expected to remain the $60 range this year, expenditures
for imports are expected to be at least $320 billion this year. That amounts to an increase
of $70 billion in spending for foreign oil in just one year. That increase would raise the
total import premium or “hidden cost” to $825.1 billion, or almost twice the President’s
$419.3 billion defense budget request for fiscal year 2006. If all costs are amortized over
the total volume of imports, that would be equivalent to adding $5.04 to the price of a
gallon of gasoline. For Persian Gulf imports, the premium would be $8.35. This would
bring the “real” price of a gallon of gasoline refined from Persian Gulf oil to $10.86. At
these prices the “real” cost of filling up a family sedan is $217.20, and filling up a large
SUV $325.80.

BTW, those prices mentioned above are based on $60 a barrel. I think today's price is hovering around $77-$78 a barrel.

7. every time I have to fill my tank
which costs me now what is used to cost for an entire month, I am reminded of Dick Cheney's secret Energy Task Force and how he fought like hell to keep those notes secret.

This is why. They're gaming the entire country just like Enron gamed California. Other utility companies are doing it now, too. I just got the largest electricty bill I've ever gotten.

If these lackeys would remove their face from BushCo's a** for a couple minutes, they might see that as well. :grr:

8. Doesn't she realize that we'd all be millionaires if we'd give up
drinking those $4 lattes every day? Isn't that what the budgeting folks that come on Oprah say? They have a point: that's $1400 a year. If only we could give up our gas habit we could all be millionaires as well. Oh wait; most people need fuel to get to work.

Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 08:25 AM by calico1
As is the one in an e-mail going around that compares the cost per gallon of gas to that of things like milk, nail polish, bottled water, etc. Its a meaningless comparison. How many people go through 12-15 GALLONS of nail polish in a week? Or latte? Or bottled water? Yet there are always people dumb enough to say "hey I never thought of that! It is cheap now that I think of it!" :eyes:

These stupid mutherfuckers have no idea how $90.00 per barrel crude is going to impact the country.

16. What they are up to?

I've heard comments that oil would be in the $50 to $60 per barrel areas if it wasn't for the political risk premium.

Who is it that is constantly finding another country to hassle and start a crisis with?

Who is it that supports Israel's terrorism?

Who is it started the mess in Iraq?

Is it the OIL BOYS in the White House??????????????

Looks like they can continue to make the big $$$ till they can start the BIG war...then they clamp the lid on and really show their true face....

We'll all get to wear Groucho type masks...only they'll look like Hitler's face?

11. Well, it's cheaper here than in Canada or Europe
If that's any consolation.

Personally, I figure that the oil and gas companies should be nationalized. Either that or their profits should be taxed at 100% and they should be prevented from giving out dividends. Perhaps limiting CEO salary to 100 times that of the full time employee average might be a good idea too. I would also advocate a vehicle weight or engine displacement tax with 100% duty on anything over 4 liters. Tough times call for tough measures, and if anyone thinks that oil will EVER be under 50 dollars a barrel again, they are living in magic happy oil fantasy land where the magic happy oil faeries milk the oil cows.

13. Average commutes in Europe are much shorter than in the U.S.
They walk, bike, and use public transportation much more than us.

We use more fuel per person, thus fuel costs are more expensive for us.

Of course that's the fault of our greedy, unthinking culture, and poor infrastructure.

One person in a Hummer for a one hour commute. It's the American Way.

25. I think that's a regional complaint because in NYC
the system is excellent. During term time, I take Metro-North through CT to NYC three or four days a week and then ride the subway. It has never ever let me down. The talk about security is silly, and if they start randomly searching people, it'll be chaos. Just leave NYC alone and let it get stuff done. Don't you know we're busy?

Europe, the UK, Canada and Australia and New Zealand tax petrol to pay for social programs, health care for all, education and pulbic transit. The people in those countries have excelelnt public transit and they buy very fuel efficient cars. Many people do not need cars for their daily commutes. I have traveled all over Eastern and Western Europe and the UK and I can attest to the excellent public transit systems, national rail systems and fuel efficient cars. They ride bikes everywhere in Holland (it's really flat and conducive to biking.) It is also safe and esy to get places on foot. I saw many 3 wheel cars and electric cars in addition to diesel cars that get over 45 MPG.

We here in the US just get screwed.

People who have faced the desperation of not having anyone to turn to for help when the bills are due generally have a more empathetic view of other people's struggles to endure in our avaricious society. I find her to be just another superficial prattler that should be wasting people's time and making lots of money somewhere else in the entertainment industry.

These commentators were singing a different song when gas cost a little over a dollar under Clinton. Back then, you'd think that the world was coming to an end and it was all the librals' faults. Now, when gas costs almost triple when it did under Clinton, hey, it's a bargain!
