Candidates focus on faith
Blackwell, Strickland proud of their religion
BY HOWARD WILKINSON | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Ohioans have never heard so much about God and faith from their candidates for governor.

Republican Ken Blackwell has been seen often at campaign events toting the Bible under his arm, he delivers Sunday morning sermons at evangelical mega-churches and counts Ohio's most high-profile pastors of the "religious right" among his closest friends.

Democrat Ted Strickland reminds voters often that he is an ordained United Methodist minister, tells the listeners of Christian radio stations he will be guided by "biblical principles" as governor, and points to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount as the best guide for making public policy.

Both quote scripture as freely as policy wonks rattle off census data.

It sounds, at times, like a contest for "pastor-in-chief" ....

3. Strickland needs to talk about more important issues
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 10:17 AM by OzarkDem
Like how Ohio is going to rebuild its economy, bring back jobs, fund education and help people get health care.

This idea of spending all your time campaigning while spouting Bible verses is silly. Strickland is a good guy and has a lot more to offer than this.

On edit - his campaign hasn't even come up with any real policy plans for education or health care, to name two. They really should be getting down to business.

4. Shame on Ohio. Shame on BOTH parties! We have NO CHOICE.
I believe in separation of church and state. Running on one's religion is just pure BS!

We are not electing the Pastor of Ohio.

We need a third candidate.

5. No we don't
We need for Ted to start talking about real issues. Right now, he's getting some bad advice from the DLC about how to win this race. He should know better. He's not acting like himself.

6. I just attended a Strickland rally
He did not quote any bible verses. He did mention that he was advertising on Christian radio because those people who listen to Christian radio need to know that Democrats are the party of morality. That morality means good paying jobs, health care, education.........

He gave a strong message of turning around Ohio. The rally was packed with supporters and generated a banner story in the local paper.

I truly don't think you have anything to worry about, Handpuppet.
