US Senate set to defy Bush veto threat over stem cell research

by Charlotte Raab

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Senate was set to defy President George W. Bush's veto threat by passing legislation drastically increasing government funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Snip...

The Senate has been debating three separate bills on stem cell research, which supporters say offers major possibilities for medical breakthroughs.

The main bill, the controversial Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, would lift rules set by Bush in 2001 that make federal funds available only to research on a small number of existing embryonic stem cell lines.

Snip...

Senator John Kerry, the Democratic contender in the last presidential election, criticized Bush's veto threat.

"President Bush has signed 1,163 bills into law without vetoing a single one of them. A veto now would send a message to all Americans that, on crucial issues, our differences are greater than our shared convictions.

4. The Senate is wasting time, money and effort
placating the religiously insane in this country. "Conservatives" have opposed scientific and medical advances for hundreds of years but accept the positive results thereof. That is still going on today in the 21st century. Fuck them straight to hell. The benefits of this research is being pushed back years because of the fucking "beliefs" of people who hate in the name of Jesus Christ. Please would a lurker share with us a rationale that proves me wrong.

7. Guess which country WILL be marketing the science derived from research -
China is on the road to overtake the US in science and research because of the last 6 years of BushInc.

5. I really want to see a note placed on the medical records of all
who oppose stem cell research, that they cannot receive treatments that come from that research.

We will have cures from stem cells eventually. And you KNOW that when these repukes develop a disease that stem cell research could treat, or even cure, they'll want it, even though many other people (including my mother in law) have died waiting for it because these same asshole repukes have delayed the research.

9. Roger that Teammate
My father suffered with Alzheimer's prior to his death and it was hell on earth. There should be two doors, one for those who support stem cell research and one for those who don't. There is no way those who oppose stem cell research would object to such construction; unless of course they want to expose their hypocrisy.

6. I'd love to see him get his veto shoved back into his smug face
right about now... especially on something as socially and scientifically beneficial as Stem Cell research.

Let's see how it plays out.

8. Sadly the more "we the people" get behind this kind of..............
initiative, the more emboldened President Bush will become. Unfortunately I think he wants to be in the position of being able to "stand up for" what he thinks is right in the face of long odds (majority support for more research in this case). Bush wants this to be a defining moment in his presidency, a moment where he stands tall and principled in the face of difficult opposition. For him this is about his legacy, one that he must understand will largely rest on what the "religious right" thinks of his presidency in 20 years.
