So, what happened to the domino effect in the Midle East? |
|
Did we somehow miss the good news? Or what we see now is exactly what Chimpy meant? Let's bet what country will join Chimpy's domino effect next. I bet on Syria. No folds please.

1. There's several things the right has touted as Iraq War aftereffects... |
|
the nascent government in Lebanon, for example. Or the democratic reforms in the last Egyptian election -- which, admittedly, resulted in a more-theocratic government, but reforms nonetheless.
Of course, one could point out that the seemingly dictatorial machinations of Ahmadinejad in Iran and the continued Baathist dictatorship in Syria run counter to this supposed effect, but the arguement from the right would probably be something like plugging one's fingers in one's ears and going "la la la la la la la"

when the Palestinians up and exercised their democratic rights - look what happened. Their elected government, perhaps the only real example of "democratic dominoes" that the misadmin can point to, was ostracized by the US.
Tom Leher comes to mind, since the made-for-domestic-consumption bagatelle of democratic dominoes is nothing new...
Send the Marines ---------------- c. 1965 Tom Leher
When someone makes a move of which we don't approve Who is it that always intervenes
UN and OAS they have their place, I guess. But first Send the Marines!
We'll send them all we've got, John Wayne and Randolph Scott, remember those exciting fighting scenes.
To the shores of Tripoli but not to Mississippoli. What do we do? We send the Marines
For might makes right until they've seen the light. They've got to be protected. All their rights respected. Until somebody we like can be elected.
Members of the Corps all hate the thought of war. They'd rather kill them off by peaceful means.
Stop calling it aggression. Oh, we hate that expression!
We only want the world to know that we support the status quo. They love us everywhere we go.
So when in doubt, Send the Marines!
