House Democrats Supporting Bush's Stem Cell Veto
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 10:58 PM by Bob Geiger
There were only 14 of them, but they are names we should not forget -- the Democrats in the House of Representatives who voted today to support George W. Bush's veto of H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. While their votes would have made no difference in the outcome -- there were nowhere near enough votes to reach the two-thirds majority required to override Bush's foolish choice -- this is a stain these 14 should permanently carry on their Congressional resumes.

They are:
  • Jerry Costello (IL)
  • Lincoln Davis (TN)
  • Tim Holden (PA)
  • Marcy Kaptur (OH)
  • Dale Kildee (MI)
  • Daniel Lipinski (IL)
  • Jim Marshall (GA)
  • Mike McIntyre (NC)
  • Alan Mollohan (WV)
  • James Oberstar (MN)
  • Collin Peterson (MN)
  • Nick Rahall (WV)
  • Bart Stupak (MI)
  • Gene Taylor (MS)

And thus the need over the next four to six years to win back a healthy majority in the House is once again brought into specific relief. We need these 14 in our numbers now, but if we can go up 20 to 30 seats in the next few years, it will be a pleasure to kick their asses to the curb and be able to cite this vote when that happens.

5. A letter to the local papers just went out
With these two so called Democrats vote. They voted against Lane Evans who had to step down due to illness this research could of helped. You vote against veterans you will take a hit. They should hold their heads in shame. They have lost the support of Veterans For Progress IL.

3. We don't need to kick them to the curb, they give us more committee seats
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 11:17 PM by Hippo_Tron
But you are right that we do need to get a progressive majority so that we can win votes without these guys so that we aren't compromising with them and thereby moving our agenda to the right. On the other hand, if we can find viable primary challengers to go up again them, then I'm all for it.

6. Dan Lipinski, IL 3rd is a pure DINO and I will not vote for
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 12:37 AM by mohinoaklawnillinois
him in November.

This guy inherited this Congressional seat from his father in 2004. His old man, William O. Lipinski, ran as the only Democrat in the primary in March and then "suddenly" decided in August to retire. The Cook County Democratic Committee then put "Danny Boy" in to run in his father's place.

I met him once in June of 2005 at a "townhall" meeting here and I asked him then about stem cell research. His answer was something along these lines, "Even though I'm a lifelong Type 1 diabetic, I'm against embryonic stem cell research. I believe in the sanctity of life". To put it mildly I was dumbfounded. I couldn't believe he actually said this.

Talk about voting against your own self-interests...

He did have two opponents in this year's primary, but one of them, John T. Kelly was, IMHO, a sham candidate. Kelly's campaign manager was the brother of Lipinski's campaign manager. The other candidate, who myself and my husband supported and worked for, John P. Sullivan was the only real Democrat in the race.

Lipinski won big time because not only did he have the support of the Regular Democratic Party in Cook County, he also had the help of the Ward Organizations in the 23rd, 15th, and 19th Wards in the City.

My not voting for him won't make any difference. Lipinski has a lock on this seat, at least this time around. Hopefully in 2008, someone will come along and knock this loser back to Tennessee where he was teaching political science in 2004 before "Dad" decided to retire.

edited for typos
