Gingrich reveals the books on his nightstand
:scared::boring::scared: :yoiks:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13921501/

Newt Gingrich, author of “Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America,” (Regnery Publishing Inc.)

I am currently reading:

Lou Cannon’s “Governor Reagan: His Rise to Power”: an interesting study by a reporter who first began covering Reagan in 1965
David Hackett Fischer’s “Paul Revere’s Ride”: a brilliant analysis of the role of citizenship in training and arming the Massachusetts citizens who stood up to the British Army in April 1775

Francis S. Collins’ “The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief”: a deeply moving account of the head of the human genome's project’s belief in God and how he brings together faith and science — a wonderful book

Andrew Mango’s “Ataturk: The Biography of the Founder of Modern Turkey”: a solid study of the most successful modernizer in Islam
Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln”: a very solid study of how Lincoln emerged from obscurity and led his rivals in a cabinet that kept together the Union through our most bitter and painful war

Glen Reynolds’ “An Army of Davids”: a very insightful look at the power of personal computing to turn each individual into a David capable of defeating the Goliath of big government. Has enormous implications for rethinking government

Gingrich says America finds itself at a crossroad
In ‘Winning the Future,’ published last year, former speaker of the House writes that the U.S. and the West face threats from Islam. Read an excerpt

1. "Ditch Your Wife While She Has Cancer, and Maximize Profits"
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 09:02 AM by SpiralHawk
That was Gingrich's most revealing tome.

What an amoral moran.

And he wants to preach to the rest of us.

I'll just BET he has as much moral standing as Bill Bennett, another hypocritical republicon crony.

5. i disagree
i agree that what gingrich did was immoral

abandoning his wife while she had cancer. totally agree

but bennett? sorry. gambling (LEGALLY) which did not place his family finances in jeapardy? i see this as neither hypocritical or immoral

maybe i am biased, since i am a winning poker player and view it as a sport of skill (given sufficient "n", the luck factor is factored out. that is why the best players win so much - over and over again over the years)

i see nothing immoral about gambling, or hypocritical about bennett's past gambling.

i see no reason to disrespect bennett and plenty of reasons to disrespect gingrich

and that's totally tangential to political views - since we are talking character

6. It should be hypocritcal to RW fundies, who do think gambling is
immoral. But they just ate it up when ol' Bill wrote his Book of Virtues. They are the ones being hypocritcal.

7. well...
well, that's a seperate issue

my point was i saw nothing hypocritical or immoral about BENNETT's behavior

so, the point stands

when bennett wrote that book, his gambling was not public knowledge, so i don't see the relevance anyways as to his readership

frankly, i have no idea if fundies are for or against gambling and in what proportion, but that's kind of tangential to bennett.

and certainly, if the only people who can write about moral issues have to be "morally pure", then nobody could write about moral issues, since everybody has faults/sins/transgressions (regardless of whether you think gambling *is* a transgression)

i take moral stances all the time and i am FAR from pure :)

(further disclosure - yeah RIGHT ) :)

10. As Far as Bennett's Gambling,
he seemed to have been sneaking around and not publicizing it. I agree that it was not inherently immoral, but it was surreptitious and it did clash with his public posturing. Same with Pat Robertson's racehorse.

17. Bennet's an all-around turd...
...the only reason that the gambling is the example used to bash him with is because it's the only one of his many, many transgressions into hypocracy/idiocy that actually got ink.

The rest he sort of skated on. Well except for the racist abortion remark -- but even that just sort of blew over.

Hardcore drug war goose-stepper and loyal BushCo apologist. You won't find much love lost for that turd here.

Welcome to DU! :hi:

15. It is hypocritical to run around the nation railing against liberals
and claiming to be above reproach, while SNEAKING (which is what Bennett did) off to your favorite Hot Spot Casino.

2. Talk about contrived.
I doubt that Gingrich has anything at all on his reading list. That list is a piece of subtle advertising directed at the groups Gingrich wants to appeal to. Makes me wonder if he's considering a return to politics.

8. Exactly...
..."contrived," indeed. I don't doubt that Gingrich reads, has books on his nightstand, etc., but honestly, a whole stack of scholarly tomes with finely nuanced ideological content in the titles? Puh-leeeeeeeeeeze.

On my nightstand?

Michael Malone "First Lady" (re-read recently, waiting to go back downstairs to the bookcase.)

Anne McCaffrey "Crystal Singer" (current "go to sleep" paperback, Xth re-reading.)

Seymour Hersh "Chain of Command" (working my way through slowly, it's dense.)

James H. Schmitz "Eternal Frontier" (short stories to read aloud with the Darling Husband.)

Randall Balmer "Thy Kingdom Come" (finished, saving for a friend.)

Jay Levinson/Seth Godin "The Guerilla Marketing Handbook" (working through slowly on SCORE counselor's recommendation.)

Janet Evanovich "Twelve Sharp" (Just got and putting off because I know once I pick it up I'm gone until I turn the last page.)

I mean, who the dickens keeps nothing but weighty non-fiction on their NIGHTSTAND, for petesqueaks?

Contrived, indeed. But then, the amphibian NewtBoy does NOTHING that isn't carefully calculated and spun for effect.

scornfully,
Bright

9. Mr. WWIII
He was on Fox yesterday sighting all the reasons he felt WWIII was upon us. He made reference to many events like the 9/11 attack. But he also made mention of the OK city bombings, which took place 11 years ago. I am surprised he did not make mention of the Vietnam war as evidence.
