NAACP speech George Bush gives new meaning to the phrase "utter gall"
I don't know if it's online yet, since it just ended. But I was stunned to see Bush had the nerve to go on for several minutes about how important it is for people of color to have the vote. And how it had been denied them at some point in the unspecified past. And how wrong that was.

At one point, I just couldn't help walking over to the TV and knocking on his little glass-enclosed skull and asking, "Hello? Hello? Anybody home? How the hell do you think you got into office, ya moran?"

22. You don't speak to descendants of slaves and discuss ownership society!

You don't speak to descendants of slaves and discuss an ownership society!

How can Bush talk about regretting the denial of black people votes of yesteryear when he and his party denied over 50,000 blacks their votes in 2000 and again did it in 2004 when Ken Blackwell hid the voting machines on his own people and made them wait for hours to slow the rate of votes of blacks for Democrats while Republicans voted within 15 minutes.

The REPUBLIKLAN Party will attempt to suppress the votes of blacks in 2006 and 2008 unless blacks and everyone else get absentee votes and submit them by mail and that the paper absentee ballots will have to get counted with both Democratic and Republican parties present and counted by trusted people.

It remined me of the infmaous Hitler at Nurenburg speech.

This is how he plans on winning the African American vote?

LOL!

3. ILLEGITIMATE pResident
Perhaps they should have showed the footage of dead bodies floating in the toxic overflowed Lake Ponchitrain behind him as he spoke. WHY he was even asked to appear baffles me. This country is really gone. Even the NAACP appears to be afraid of him, when they ask him to appear in an election year so he and the Democrats can now continue to use blacks for their vote fishing. Democrats also need to remember that for all the criticizing of Bush's response to Katrina, THEY LET HIM GET AWAY WITH IT. He has been there for six years, GETTING AWAY WITH IT. The smirking ba*****.

I am so disgusted with politics across the board right now. It is nothing but powerplaying at the expense of human life. And now Bush is applauded by the NAACP after all the blacks his policies have killed in Iraq and America? And please, sign the Voting Rights Act? HE IS AN ILLEGITIMATE pResident who got there by STEALING AN ELECTION. HE STOLE OUR PRESIDENT FROM US! The Voting Rights Act has already been abrogated! What the hell is the worth of a bill on paper that is signed by a lying, thieving, election stealing corporate crook whose policies actually hold down the very people that bill is supposed to support? Hello people, DIEBOLD...FLorida... USSC... EXXON...ENRON... <sigh>

It is obvious that the vast majority of people in this country will never learn and never wake up. Very disappointing. And yes, what utter gall.

12. I don't believe the NAACP really expected Bush to accept their
invitation to speak. He has been invited every year he has been in office and this is the first time he has always refused in the past. It must have come as quite a surprise to them when he accepted this year. It's easy to see that they are desperate to reclaim the black vote and I hope this tactic backfires on them big time.

10. Well, I am referring to recent elections.
I don't think too many Democrats were trying to stop minority voters from going to the polls.

7. Now, now, let's not play the blame game. It's not important how
voting was denied or who hired what companies that purged whom. :sarcasm:

8. And, didn't he seem, like, really angry the whole time?
He was pounding that podium like he was giving an '04 stump speech about how Kerry/Edwards were soft on terror.

That was one of the strangest Bush speeches I've ever suffered through.

9. I agree with you
That was just plain odd. He seemed to strike every wrong note possible ..... from his yelling *at* instead of speaking *to* the audience .... to his condesceing 'hep ta read thu fahn print' on mortgage papers .... to just being there. It was completely discordant.

11. Think of it as economy of time and effort
Normally, getting the feeling that speech gave me requires massive amounts of illegal drugs and a lost weekend before one can get to the point of feeling that leftover and sick and disconnected from reality. With Bush speaking, we can cut right to the chase. (Moooooooooooan! I swear. Never again. I'm going on the wagon this time fer shure.)

13. Do we have any DU members who belong to NAACP?

I asked before, no response. Must mean something.
But if we do, sure would like to hear from them today.

I was looking for some DU perspective from "inside."

Later tonight, I found the terrific report from Anita Garcia from "inside" the convention, definitely one of the Greatest.

I really couldn't have helped you with any perspective on what happened, since I wasn't there. (Erm, I guess you already figured that out from the fact that I watched it on TV. Doh!)

17. Here's the actual quote - a bit different and worse than I remembered
"In the 19th century the wound resulted in a civil war. In the 20th century, it denied African Americans the vote in many parts of our country. And at the beginnings of the 21st century, the wound is not fully healed and whole communities -- (applause) -- to heal this wound for good, we must continue to work for a new founding that redeems the promise of our declaration and guarantees the birthright of every citizen."

No, ya big mook! It's not fully healed and it won't be as long as your party keeps working so hard to suppress the black vote and our party keeps rolling over and letting you get away with it.

treated Smirk to the scorn he so richly deserves.
