We were at Bush's speech at NAACP today
That Dog Don’t Hunt:
Bush Addresses the NAACP

July 20, 2006

The last person we expected to see at this year’s NAACP National Convention was George W. Bush. Last summer, we spent a month in the ditches of Crawford, Texas hoping to hear from the President to no avail. Little did we know that, less than a year later, he would travel across town to see, as Reverend Nelson B. Rivers, III says, the “big dog”, the NAACP.

As he stood at the podium in the shadow of great civil rights leaders like Julian Bond and Reverend Rivers, we came to realize why the President has, in the past, carefully screened and scripted his slack jaw audiences. He would be well served to return to the days of loyalty oaths and Republican thugs guarding the doors whenever he speaks.

The mainstream media, thus far, has painted a rosy picture of Bush’s foray into the heart of the oldest and largest civil rights organization, in the world. It wasn’t that pretty at all. The big dog was in the house and the big dog was unimpressed.

Before Bush reached the podium, a significant number of NAACP delegates rose from their seats and left the meeting hall in protest. The remaining audience responded to the President in what might be charitably described as a cool reception. From our vantage point in the Louisiana delegation, it appeared that perhaps one out of three actually applauded when Bush was introduced.

The President’s speech writers are apparently on vacation this week. Repeatedly, Bush would deliver what he believed to be a zinger, pause for a favorable reaction, and then, receiving none, stagger on to his next lame and insincere comment.

Behind us sat the Texas delegation, a group who knows this speaker all to well. The delegates from his “home state” grumbled and snickered throughout the address while cheerfully making digs at the lone Bush supporter in their delegation.

The only significant rounds of applause came when the President so magnanimously announced that he would sign the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act and when he acknowledged that black people just flat out don’t trust Republicans.

Much has been made in the MSM about the two hecklers who were removed from the meeting hall. Please know that these two young men engaged in their verbal dissent in a dignified and non-violent manner. As they were led away, only inches away from our seats, their heads were held high and their protestations continued. One of these young men, as he passed us yelled, “How long will you be his house Negro?”

Speaking of which, Bush, lacking the courage to appear alone, had Secretary Rice on his arm. Although we’ll never know for sure, we choose to interpret the young man’s query to have been directed towards Condi.

Why Condi was there defies any other explanation because the President failed to mention any foreign issues whatsoever during his address to this worldwide organization. He did not warn us about terrorism or acknowledge that we are currently prosecuting a war in Iraq. Possibly the most striking feature of this address was his failure to excuse all of his misdeeds on 9-11.

But, of course, we knew that there would be no discussion of preemptive war, torture, detainees, or domestic spying. We raised the issue by raising the peace sign silently from our chairs throughout the address. From our seats in the Louisiana delegation we quietly represented, as best we could, the peace movement with that simple gesture.

In a perfect world, Bush would have spoken to an empty hall this morning. However, the crowd response to the President’s address was so weak that it just as well could have been empty. Yes, the big dog was in the house this morning. And the big dog was not George Bush.

The big dog was the NAACP and the Freedom Fighters who came to Washington to renew the struggle, not to endure a lame sales pitch from a failed president.

1. Thank you for this.
The corpmedia has given him another pass on this one, although the paltry applause was noticeable. They'll probably amplify it on the replay clips.

107. A failed pResident.
You don't speak to descendants of slaves and discuss an ownership society!

How can Bush talk about regretting the denial of black people votes of yesteryear when he and his party denied over 50,000 blacks their votes in 2000 and again did it in 2004 when Ken Blackwell hid the voting machines on his own people and made them wait for hours to slow the rate of votes of blacks for Democrats while Republicans voted within 15 minutes.

The REPUBLIKLAN Party will attempt to suppress the votes of blacks in 2006 and 2008 unless blacks and everyone else get absentee votes and submit them by mail and that the paper absentee ballots will have to get counted with both Democratic and Republican parties present and counted by trusted people.

Edit to add: Clueless here; I had no idea Condi was there, and while I could hear the hecklers, I didn't know what they were saying. Thanks for that insight, too!

You can't always trust their interpretation of events. Wonder is MSM is going to mention Condi's presence. Too bad you couldn't throw eggs or tomatoes at him without ending up in Gitmo - but I know you wanted to. :) Were there any protest signs or displays?

15. Thanks so much for the recap!
Anita,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us first hand what went on today. I am so proud of the NAACP and its members for handling themselves in a dignified manner, a manner which Bush doesn't understand based on his actions. I don't believe the man has a dignified bone in his body.

I'm thrilled to hear that many got up and left as he was announced, and I'm also thrilled to hear he won't be given the opportunity to turn this into one big photo op - telling us all about the love fest today between the NAACP and Bush.

George Bush is a small man, in a small man's body, with a small man's mind. In reality, Bush never stood a chance, because he doesn't believe that we are all created equal.

Thanks again!

I have to say that NPR did report the lack of applause when he expected it and the fact that there were many empty seats. They also reported that many sat with their arms crossed across their chests. Kudos to NPR. They did play a couple of times when * didn't get what he expected and then bumbled on.

17. President Promise Everything - Deliver Nothing bush,
was given the reception he has earned. He let the nation down and the people of the Gulf Coast and new Orleans down visibly and for the world to see. His reception was given the grace it needed not the scorn it deserved. To bring Condi shows his abject fear and what he perceives to be his only visible "triumph" in relations with the African American community.

He was playing to this photo op since he knows Katrina will dog his tarnished legacy and the republican party.

Thanks for going Anita! :applause:

Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 06:05 PM by Straight Shooter
I was appalled at the photo. If you haven't seen it here, maybe someone else can post it. I was just wondering if I was misinterpreting bush's "see, I can do anything I wanna" attitude, or if maybe bush and Rep. Green have a history.

Someone should have asked Condi if she was wearing the shoes she bought while New Orleans was drowning.

Great commentary, Anita. Very objective and fair, and quite damning of bush in its honesty.

edit: I found the photo on another thread:

Perhaps someone else can clear up the matter. Since Green is from Texas, there's a chance bush may know him on a personal level, but still, what he did was absolutely inappropriate.

Maybe someone can fill you in on what happened and you can report back. Once again, a most excellent summary, very fair and objective.

29. Thank you for a much different report than provided by the news world.
I was happy to read your accounting, as I couldn't understand how he could go from the disgust and mistrust of the NAACP of the past, to adoration of today. My faith is restored and I'm glad to see that he will have to work a whole lot harder to earn the trust of the NAACP rather than turning on the charm for 20 minutes.

I was also surprised to hear that he brought Condi along for protection. She has more important things to do right now than babysitting with him. Thanks for that bit of news. I wonder how many other times she has been there and it hasn't been reported?

Thanks for your report. I shall K&R.

30. Recommended and Thank you for the report. I just watched ABC's World
News tonight and there was no mention of Condi or of the walk out at the beginning and of course, no pictures of any peace signs. And the reception was described as "lukewarm" which seems a bit of an overstatement.

How any self respecting journalist can continue to work for corporate media is beyond me. The only reason that I watch TV news at all is to see what was not reported and how much that was reported, was spun in the administration's direction. It helps me when I talk with my less informed neighbors, aka, republicans.

84. And more: where to begin with this heavily-coded crapola
> Joined by political guru Karl Rove and Secretary of State Condoleezza
> Rice, Bush used the occasion to pitch his approach to empowerment for
> minority communities. For instance, lowering estate taxes, which he
> said robs African American entrepreneurs from passing on their wealth
> to the next generation; establishing charter schools, which would
> allow parents to opt out of poor school districts; creating an
> ownership society that encourages African Americans and other
> minorities to own financial assets; and fostering faith-based
> organizations to help uplift those in trouble.

All I can say is apparantly the NAACP's membership is smarter than the average Republican if they saw through this crap, which is all Bush-Speak for "Let me destroy the last vestiges of the social safety net."

57. The protesters were Lyndon LaRouche plants
The NAACP delegates, while disagreeing deeply with Bush, would never have stood up and disrupted his - or any invited guest's - speech in that manner.

By the way - the same group of protesters heckled NAACP President Bruce Gordon earlier in the week.

the walkers, but didn't know LaRouche had a coordinated effort going on.

68. Yes - I was sitting near them - they shouted "La Rouche wants to know
where's Dick Cheney?" They were also handing out LaRouche literature earlier in the week.

I don't know how coordinated the effort was, but LaRouche people turn up all over Washington at events like this. They're a pretty common occurrence.

And they laughed at him in response to some other parts of his speech that weren't supposed to be funny - it may have sounded like support to a television audience, but they were laughing AT him, not WITH him.

76. NOW it's clear why these pricks want to control the internets...
Because we can report what's really happening to each other without relying on the so called "MSM" to feed us their version of the story.

It should come as no surprise that they HATE our spirited version of discourse and factual reporting.

WE are the eyes and ears of America, and CNN and MSNBC are only going to tell us what they want us to believe is true.

Thank you DU, and thank you Anita Garcia.

77. I have not yet read much on the speech...
Bush made to the NAACP. I am sure he talked about home ownership and how his tax cuts are creating jobs....BUT, Is it true that he said the "Death Tax" (Estate Tax) was a bad thing for Blacks and other people of color because it prevented them from passing their estates to the family? If so...Was he serious?

Did he also say that he was not a racist because he is color blind?...and that when he was a kid he had a black friend?

I can only shake my head.....

A friend dropped by on an urgent mission. He'd been to see his family in NOLA and had some Cafe du Monde coffee for me, a favorite of mine.

He was so upset. He said as you looked around (and he was there for 2 weeks), there were NO signs of any repair, none. He simply couldn't believe it.

Neither can I.

Thanks for this realitiy based report.

82. I have a small point to make about this.
First, let me say that Bush deserves no respect from the NAACP, or anyone else, for that matter. The man is a clown and simply should not be our President.

However, when I see this kind of reaction to him speaking, with the backdrop of the past five years' snubbing he's given the organization, it makes me think. This is why he refused to go in the previous years- because he knew it was going to be a hostile audience.

On the one hand, we hold it against him that he refused to speak to the NAACP for so long. But, on the other hand, we HAD judged him, already, and we knew that he doesn't have the interests of black people in his heart. The reaction he was going to get was basically set in stone. He clearly wasn't looking forward to it. And, what he got, he deserved.

It's almost as if what we were holding against him is that he refused to show up, in person, and take the paddling. That was the only thing that he was going to get- just a beating.

blacks. He came to show Independents and moderates that he's not a racist. I'm glad that my people didn't fall for that shit. Please don't fall for it, either. Politics is the name of his game, and the nerve of him to bring KKKarl Rove; he needed Rove to tell him what to say to the negroes. He's despicable and disgusting. Again, I'm glad that my black brothers and sisters--for the most part--aren't falling for it like some of them did in 2000 and 2004. Bush is anything BUT a uniter! Everything he's done was meant to divide.

Sorry, the racist son of a bitch and his facist, nazi cadre of evil cronies get no sympathy from me. He can kiss my healthy, black butt...

Bush Walk Differs From Bush Talk, NAACP Told
By Jeff Zeleny, Chicago Tribune
July 20, 2006

WASHINGTON — One day before President Bush addresses the NAACP for the first time during his presidency, two Democratic senators Wednesday urged those attending the meeting to hold the administration accountable for renewing — and enforcing — the Voting Rights Act.

Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois warned NAACP delegates to be cautious of any civil rights promises Bush offers when speaking to the group today. The senators criticized Republicans for allowing the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act to nearly expire and said the Justice Department had failed to aggressively pursue allegations of disenfranchisement.

"Don't be bamboozled. Don't buy into it," Obama said, trying to anticipate Bush's speech, which is expected to touch upon his support for extending the Voting Rights Act. "It's great if he commits to signing it, but what is critical is the follow-through. You don't just talk the talk, but you also walk the walk."

Ever notice when chucklenuts is really insecure about a particular event, he drags a woman w/ him. He tosses pickles out front (though not so much lately - I suspect they upped her meds) on any number of issues; he's used his mother, w/ disasterous results - now he takes kindasleazy, who, as I understand it, the African-American community doesn't acknowledge.

He is a sniveling coward through and through. He will use (emphasis on use) ANYone as his shield in the face of any threat, whether real or imagined.

I saw a short clip on CNN, which was prefaced by announcer
noting Bush had never spoken to NAACP in 6-years, but now
his presence was apparently to make up for lost ground due
to Katrina, et al, during election year. What a fraud!

Well done!

I knew from what I was able to see on TV that the news reports were making it sound much more successful than it looked. I couldn't believe NAACP members would fall for his line and they didn't. I thought he sounded positively condescending at points. The great white massa magnanimously sharing his time and wisdom with the appropriately grateful Negros. :sarcasm:

HA! He sure picked the wrong crowd for that line of crap!

I'm proud to be a member of the NAACP and doubly proud that the Big Dog bit that miserable failure in the ass!
