What would it take to win your support for the Flag-Burning Amendment? |
|
(tongue-in-cheek, of course)
Well, here's my list:
1. Constitutional ban of all Confederate flags and memorabilia (including but not limited to bumper stickers, decals, tattoos, T-shirts, bar signs, etc.) along with a unanimous House/Senate resolution re-emphasizing that the North won the Civil War.
3. Immediate invalidation and expulsion of current administration and inauguration of rightful President Al Gore.
4. Gathering of all families of 9-11 victims to hear a live, in-person apology from Ann Coulter.
5. Nobel Peace Prize for Cindy Sheehan.
6. House/Senate Resolution apologizing to the citizens of France for all that nasty business a couple of years ago.

2. Maybe we need a flag burning day |
|
Once a year where families and local civic groups could join together and burn the nation's flag and soberly swear to try to improve the country in some really concrete way during the coming year, to remind each other of the nation's troubled past, and to warn against the hazards of excessive jingoistic nationalism. Sort of a national self-criticism day. How about it, metaphorically speaking of course? If you could change one thing within your power to change this coming year, what would it be?
Me? I'd like to donate a little more money to the candidates of my choice. I don't know if I'll be able to donate much, but I guess that every little helps.

I really don't care. Personally, I think that it someone wants to burn the flag for some political cause, let them, though as far as I can tell this is never good public relations for any cause, except maybe in Tehran.
If they want a flag-burning amendment, let them do it. It's a non-issue. I've never burned a flag in my life, and I wouldn't feel less free if it were prohibited, (except, of course, as the approved method of flag disposal).
Having flag-burning as an issue is something the right does just so they can avoid talking about substantive politics. Let them spend their time and energy protecting the flag. Whenever they engage you on some other issue, ask them "Hey, wait a minute, why do you care about this? Shouldn't you be doing something to protect the flag from desecration?" Remind them that, while they do other things, there is an army of flag desecrators out roaming the land, burning flags willy-nilly.
