What is longer: the fall or the suffering after the fall. In this case, probably the throes.

3. The "brinks" of these wars have been going on for years now...
Whereas "throes" are referred to as "LAST throes"...

So I voted for "brink," although it's hard to know how long each previous throe lasted before we got into the "last" ones.
