Anyone know exact date Dean was issued a press plane?

I believe it was late June, IIRC, hearing on a Hardball show back at the time. An exact date would be helpful.

I do know in July he got TWO national covers, TIME and Newsweek. And then FIVE national covers right before the primary.

Interestingly, the media declared Kerry's candidacy as "dead" for months, and rarely aired positive developments for his campaign, as in the Fire Fighters endorsement or Gary Hart's and Joe Wilson's. Tough for Kerry because the negative reports dried up much of his fundraising.

Could it be that the media was deliberately skewing our primary to keep Kerry from gaining the national stage because of his opposition to the FCC?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 2, 2003

Kerry Seeks to Reverse FCC's "Wrongheaded Vote"
Commission decision may violate laws protecting small businesses; Kerry to file Resolution of Disapproval

Washington, DC - Senator John Kerry today announced plans to file a "Resolution of Disapproval" as a means to overturn today's decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to raise media ownership caps and loosen various media cross-ownership rules.

Kerry will soon introduce the resolution seeking to reverse this action under the Congressional Review Act and Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act on the grounds that the decision may violate the laws intended to protect America's small businesses and allow them an opportunity to compete.

As Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Kerry expressed concern that the FCC's decision will hurt localism, reduce diversity, and will allow media monopolies to flourish. This raises significant concerns about the potential negative impacts the decision will have on small businesses and their ability to compete in today's media marketplace.

In a statement released earlier today regarding the FCC's decision, Kerry said:
"Nothing is more important in a democracy than public access to debates and information, which lift up our discourse and give Americans an opportunity to make honest informed choices. Today's wrongheaded vote by the Republican members of the FCC to loosen media ownership rules shows a dangerous indifference to the consolidation of power in the hands of a few large entities rather than promoting diversity and independence at the local level. The FCC should do more than rubber stamp the business plans of narrow economic interests.

"Today's vote is a complete dereliction of duty. The Commissioners are well aware that these rules greatly influence the competitive structure of the industry and protect the public's access to multiple sources of information and media. It is the Commission's responsibility to ensure that the rules serve our national goals of diversity, competition, and localism in media. With today's vote, they shirked that responsibility and have dismissed any serious discussion about the impact of media consolidation on our own democracy."

1. I have no idea and don't care, frankly
Dean got lots of good media coverage after he raised a huge amount of money via the Web in a couple days. That's how I remember it because I was just getting into the campaign at the time and was frustrated by the media attitude toward him (in particular Russert et al., criticizing him because he didn't know how many troops were in Iraq, and Margaret Carlson saying Dean's star was fading).

Kerry's campaign was dismissed as "dead" (and I'm still trying to find the pervasive reference to this in the mainstream media that you claim) because it was faltering. That's why he had the big shakeup in his campaign and the firing of his campaign manager, which got him back on track. Now that Dean's campaign is faltering, you see the same thing.

2. I agree Kerry has been downplayed
including currently, they have been really trying to ignore him.

But it's more about his overall threat to Bush, not just that one action. Their job is to give the dem nominee the "Gore treatment," and this is much harder to do against Kerry. And less fun, because he can fight back.

But I'm glad to see he took leadership on that important FCC ruling, I didn't know about his involvement.

5. And that's part of the problem. Noone HEARD of Kerry standing up to Bush
on important matters, so they stuck with the myth that only Dean stood against Bush. Complete horseshit because Kerry stood up against Bush in SUBSTANTIVE ways that were damaging to Bush, while Dean stood up with hot rhetoric that was more entertaining than damaging.

The press gave Dean the stage and the microphone.

3. Networks don't issue press planes.

The campaigns pay for their own press planes, so any press plane following the Dean campaign was paid for by the Dean campaign. Whoever told you otherwise is badly mistaken.

4. There was a massive outcry about the FCC ruling
If Kerry wasn't against it I would be calling him something nasty! As I recall most Senators took a position against the new FCC rules as a result of the outcry from both the left and the right.

I wrote to my House Rep, and both Senators about that crap. As did many Americans, also i joined Moveon.org about that time.

7. Locking.....
8. If you make a factual assertion about a candidate that is not generally accepted to be true, you must provide a link to a reputable source to back up your claim. Allegedly "innocent" questions which are actually an underhanded effort to spread rumors are not allowed. If you really need to know the answer to your question, try Google.
