Questions Surround Nevada Official's Sudden Death

Husband Attempts Suicide Before Funeral; Police Investigate
By ANGIE WAGNER, AP

LAS VEGAS (July 21)
<snip>

The case of the seemingly healthy state controller who died suddenly and the attempted suicide of her husband has generated a lot of chatter - and caught the attention of law enforcement.

Kathy Augustine had the unfortunate distinction of being the only constitutional officer in Nevada history ever to be impeached and convicted. She kept her job as Nevada's top finance official, but her misconduct cost her the support of many colleagues and the state Republican Party. Still, she seemed to be in good spirits and was even campaigning for another office.

So when she died unexpectedly July 11 at age 50, friends and family didn't know what to make of it. She had seemed healthy and vibrant.

Her husband, Chaz Higgs, said it was a heart attack and chalked it up to the stress of an uphill election battle for state treasurer. But just days after her death, Higgs tried to kill himself by slitting his wrists. A distraught widower too lonely to live?

2. having been widowed, real suicide is not out of the question.
I certainly thought about it, hard, after my wife died.
nothing to live for, no hope....you name it.

that having been said, the circumstances warrant an investigation.

4. thanks, yeah, that was long ago, am remarried now
but nothing stanches that pain...it just gets dimmer as time goes on.

sorry for your loss, as well.

I only posted that to make the point that anyone who is widowed can and probably will legitimately consider suicide. It does not mean they killed their spouse. This particular instance does seem suspicious, but I would hate for people to always assume that, or more accurately, to overlook it as a real suicide attempt through cynicism.

5. nope, he was her last husband's critical care nurse & they married 1 month
Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 08:21 PM by NVMojo
after that husband died and the kids from that man want his remains exhumed if hers show anything suspicious. Totally different situation then what you went through and I am sorry for your lose, Lerkfish...

And a critical care nurse knows how to "suicide" and this was just a diversion attempt. A critical care nurse has access to the chemicals that can induce a massive heart attack and are almost undetectable in the system. Nurses kill people in care facilities with that drug all the time ...can't think of the name of it at the moment ...but I believe that is why the law enforcement decided to take a second look ....

6. Follow the money!
Why should anyone in the Nevada GOP be any less CORRUPT than in any other state?
