Former President Clinton is ruining Harlem!
I didn't see this topic posted here at DU. I thought it was interesting how the media is blaming the Clenis again!

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article1191869.ece

The only reason Clinton set up an office in Harlem was because repukes cried about how much a Manhattan office would cost the taxpayers.

2. This article is stupid and the writer
obviously has no clue about New York City or Manhattan real estate. A one-bedroom apartment in NYC can go for 1.5 million dollars. Well, then a townhouse for 4 million doesn't sound so out there if the one-bedroom is your frame of reference. A handful of people picket his office and therefore we can now conclude Clinton is responsible for soaring real estate prices in Harlem. The whole premise of the article is flawed.

7. You're right -- NO clue
A Manhattan townhouse for 4 million!
I've seen studios for $1,000,000...Seriously!
Right, and it's Clinton's fault.

What a jerk.

3. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.
A one-bedroom flat which used to rent six years ago for $800 a month now costs $1,400, according to Valerie Orridge, president of the Savoy Park Tenants Association.

Seems like a reasonable hike to me, even in a poorer area, but what do I know?

6. my own house is up 125% in only 5 years, and that's in central nj
it wasn't even built 6 years ago. i'm the 2nd owner, so (alas) not all of the gain is mine.

but it's insane to blame a 75% hike over 6 years on clinton when real estate prices in the entire region have gone up at least that amount in the same time frame. i, for one, didn't move to central nj to be closer to clinton in harlem....

9. I paid 50% more
for my co-op (Manhattan) than the previous owner paid.
And she only owned it for 8 months.

5. Rents in Harlem have been on the rise for a long time,.,.,
Old Black Harlem is shrinking to the north and east and west.

Even the Bowery is prime real estate these days and the old meat packing district in Chelsea! Hell's Kitchen is kewl now...

Big population, small island. Pretty simple.

10. You know what I find amazing
They have been building all of these high rise steel and glass monster condo towers ALL over the far west side of Manhattan. The damn things are typical late 20th century UGLY bulidings with no soul and no character. It would be like living in an office tower. They have windows you can't open or very small ones you can and if the central AC fails your shit out of luck. These towers are in areas I sure as hell would not want to live in - not really so much bad but too damn far from anything. I've lived in the same area of Queens my whole life and the rents in this neighborhood have become like everywhere else in NYC - OUTRAGEOUS. My apartment is rent stabilized and I've been here 16 years so its still not bad but I've seen rents for places the size of mine and they are nuts. I couldn't afford to live in NY ,without a roomate, if I had to do it now.

14. I must agree with you..I find those
new steel buildings so awfully ugly.

I searched a long time to find the nice old building I'm in now,
surrounded by history downtown.

I even hate having to travel into those other neighborhoods in Manhattan. I get vertigo
from all that height.
