YOU GO JOE! What a speech; right out of his heart! |
|
Who saw Senator of Delaware, Joeseph Biden (D) on C-SPAN? He offers plenty. It is not all talk for a change. On Sunday July 10, at around 6:15 during C-SPAN broadcast called ROAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE he gave perhaps his best speech to date and, best of all, I feel he meant every word.
His words almost make me feel good about being an American. It's been a long time since many of us have felt comfortable about our government. Far too long.

On edit, every politician has a point of no return in my book. With Biden it was that fucking hat. Can you imagine Gore, Kerry or JFK doing something that lamely stupid? It was worse than Dukakis in the tank.

24. perhaps that is so insignificant in our real world with real problems... |
|
that very young people can't quite put their minds around grown up world problems yet. Don't worry, there's still time but not much. This expanding terrorist movement is about to explode into Pakistan, which is an Islamic nation that has plenty of nukes along with effective systems to deliver them. Biden spoke on this matter. He also pointed out that taking thousands of cops off the streets with gigantic budget cuts is a very bad thing. You might personally feel the results of that Republican choice very soon.
Energy independence will be his top issue. E85 is his emphasis. YOU GO JOE!

27. You're right, there are very young minds who are fooled into believing |
|
that Biden is more than he is. If you don't care how he views race in America (yes, that's such minor issue, isn't it?) perhaps you'll care a little more that his words keep changing. Right now he is basically saying what Bush is, only better. Stay the course. Leave troops there indefinitely. Create a country for Iraqis and hope they like what we give them. He uses bigger words and better sentences than Bush, but says the same thing.
Biden was for the invasion, and still thinks it was the right thing to do. He hasn't made good decisions in the past. He can't be trusted to make them now. Here's what he was saying five months after we invaded:
2003:
"Some in my own Party have said it was a mistake to go into Iraq in the first place, and the benefit is not worth the cost. I believe they're wrong. The cost of not acting against Saddam would have been much greater, and so is the cost of not finishing the job. The President is popular. The stakes are high. The need for leadership is great."
"Nine months ago, I voted to give the President the authority to use force. I would vote that way again today."
"Contrary to what some in my Party might think, Iraq was a problem that had to be dealt with sooner rather than later. I commend the President - He was right to enforce the solemn commitments made by Saddam. If they're not enforced, what good are they?
For me, the issue was never WHETHER we had to deal with Saddam. but WHEN and HOW. And it's precisely the WHEN and HOW that this administration got wrong. We went to war too soon. We went with too few troops."
------------
Support him if you want. There are people I trust more.

I believe we are on the "wolf" menu forever. Every time I hear a good Democratic speech I become hopeful, only to have my hopes dashed on the rocks of reason at a later date. I was uninformed about this Senator but he sure sounded good yesterday: damn.
It's back to hopelessness for me, for now. Thank you all for at least offering reliable info on Biden: damn.

that he would vote for the filibuster just once - making his vote useless. Had Kerry and Kennedy gotten exactly the number needed. Frist would simply have called for a second vote - where Biden would either have to take back his stupid statement or vote against the filibuster.
That was the most weasilly action I ever saw.

about the things he cares about. No argument there.
He'd have my heart and hustle if he's the nominee although I'm kinda rooting for 5 or 6 others ahead of him in line. Still, that's not to say I didn't appreciate his firm and persuasive objections to the notorious John Bolton for U.N. nominee.
I hope we hear his voice against Bolton's nomination coming up here... it would help keep Bolton, a bloodthirsty mad man, out of a position we need a better person for.

That guy is frightening. Freak-show frightening. Hard-boiled, one-minded, ice-hearted, lizard-souled son-of-a-handgrenade.
Biden slapped him around really well in that first hearing and along with a couple other senators, made it virtually impossible for Bolton to pass muster on the Senate floor vote. And then Dubya sneaks him in as an interim appointment.
Both Dodd and Biden could throw in again and help stop this guy.

All the Democrats on the committee are against Bolton (Kerry, Feingold, Boxer, Biden, Dodd, Sarbanes, Obama and Bill Nelson). There are 8 Democrats and 10 Republicans. Last time Voinivich voted against him in committee and he was sent to the Senate with no committee aproval. Chaffee voted for him.
Chaffee is up in November in liberal RI - I would imagine that it would be better for him - he's past a primary challange I think - to stand with the Democrats. (Maybe a RI person has insight.)
At any rate, the Democrats did succeesfully fillibuster him last time in the Senate.

On the whole, I thought Biden gave a good speech on national security. His ideas are practical and would undoubtedly work if the Republican majority in Congress would let any of his bills pass.
On the other hand, I could have done without Biden's calling Rumsfeld honorable and decent, his descrpiton of the Bush administration as well-intentioned and patriotic, and his claiming that Dubya would put his body at risk to protect America. Nothing the administration has said or done suggests anything of the sort!

.... I agree with you that he can be one hell of a great speaker. He often says all the right things and hits all the right notes.
But ......
For me, he has far too many 'I' and 'Me' staements and far too few 'Us' and 'We' statements.
Then there's the issue of walking the walk after talking the talk.
I make these comments but quickly admit to not having seen the particular speech you're citing .... unless this episode of 'Road to the White Houes' is a rerun of his last profile on that series.

I resent that he was on shows like Maher knocking Kerry (and Feingold)'s Iraq plan saying that unlike his it didn't have a provision for diplomacy. The plan which had already been submitted to the Senate as legislation very clearly had a call for a summit - as had every Kerry plan since 2004. Kerry even explained the plan first in an op-ed that explained it well.
Biden has a different plan - Kerry and Feingold don't run around lying about Biden's plan. I have no problem with their being different plans, I do have a problem with dishonesty.

there as often as Biden is. And, not all of them are as charming as Biden. I've heard him give a couple of good speeches, too. But, then my memory goes back to all the appearances on Russert where he seemed a toady and the flash back of the Anita Hill hearings comes into my mind and it makes me ill. I was up until 2:00a.m. watching them and they are burned in my brain ...how he preened for the camera and managed to make the hearings seem a rubber stamp.
We all want our Dems to be out there giving good speeches...it's just that some of us who have been on here for awhile and have some "years on us" have learned to go beneath the surface and the pretty words with some of our Dems who don't practice what they preach.
