The Suicidebaums and the Self-Hating Jews
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 08:22 PM by Poll_Blind
From The Huffington Post:

I wish, for the first and, I hope, last time, to address the "self-hating Jew libel." Many of you, not being Jewish, have not had to deal with the insipid, classist, racist, xenophobic calumny that is the self-hating Jew libel. The self-hating Jew libel is generally made by supporters of all military actions taken by Israel regardless of how inhumane, provocative, self-defeating, out of proportion, or frickin' stupid.

These blindly loyal supporters of Israeli military force use the self-hating Jew libel to explain why some Jews don't support Israel's inhumane, provocative, self-defeating, out of proportion, and frickin' stupid military escapades. It's an ad hominum argument. And it relies on anti-Jewish stereotypes to impute a pre-diagramed psychology upon someone of whom the libeler has no understanding. It offers nothing of substance except to accuse the Jewish critic of Israel of secretly hating the swarthy, pushy, hairy, greedy, monkey-like Shylocks of his own fantasies and projecting that anti-Semitic image inward. He knows he's a Jew, just like all the pushy, garlicky, stroemel-sporting heebs the goyim hate, and out of fear of confronting his own exile from goyishe acceptability, he has come to hate the greasy matzo-ball-eating foreskin cutting hook-nosed diamond merchant that is himself.

--snip--

I'd like to say, being a US Jew, but having been to Israel and engaged in bitter discussions with Israeli career military folk who are as crazy as can be, that the Israeli government and the IDF don't represent the world's Jews anymore than Hezbollah represents Lebanon. In fact, they don't even represent a majority of Jews in Israel. Well, at least I hope not. All right, maybe that's a little over-optimistic. They certainly don't represent me, and I'm angry that they think they're doing Jews all over the world some kind of big fat favor with their insane overkill response to Hezbollah's idiotic and evil provocation.

And to call me a self-hating Jew because I make the above argument is ignorant, hypocritical, grotesque, obscene, and simply infuriating. Please allow me a moment to say that the self-hating Jew libelers, those Suicidebaums, are the ones actually supporting a policy and course of action that is destructive both to Jews and to Israel. I could stoop to their level and say, it must be because they hate themselves that they support such stupidity. I won't. But my inclination – call it the Evil Inclination if you must – is to say to these Suicidebaums: lech lim sotz, kish mirn tuchas, un chupa mes huevos, bitches.

--snip--

Amira Haas, Gideon Levi, Uri Avnery, Norman Finkelstein and a whole host of Liberal Jewish writers, reporters, etc. have all been called this in explicitly the past on our own Israel/Palestine forum. Water under the bridge, messages deleted, but it's a sad yet absolute fact.

2. Some people refuse.......
http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-seeman041902.asp

It is "the most compelling example of simmering dissent within Israel," says a correspondent for The Independent. "The refuseniks," reports The Scotsman, "are spearheading a reawakening of the Israeli left."

In Newsweek, a senior editor for Foreign Affairs compared the "refusenik movement" to a small anticonscription drive in South Africa that turned the tide against apartheid in the 1980s. Hmmm.

The numbers tell a less dramatic story. "Refuseniks" are those Israeli reserve soldiers and officers who have signed a letter declaring their refusal to serve in the territories. They hardly classify as a "movement." As I write, their petition has reached just over 400; that number has scarcely budged in months. It's also a miniscule fraction of the tens of thousands of Israelis who perform reserve duty without reservation.

(The petition is updated regularly on the group's website. )

How much significance should we read into the protestations of about 400 young Israelis? First let's assume the online figures are correct (i.e., every signature is authentic and there is no double counting). One must compare the number of "refuseniks" against a standing Israeli army of 186,500 troops and 30,000 reservists. Thus the ratio of "refuseniks" to participants is less than 2 per 1,000 draftees, a trifling figure.

www.refuseniks.org

Refuseniks uses stunning archival footage, still photos and interviews to document the stories of Israeli men and women who refuse to serve in the military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. In Refuseniks we meet several Israelis from different walks of life including 18 year Old Shani, and original signer of the high school letter to Ariel Sharon condemning the occupation and Rami Kaplan, an officer who admits to ordering his men to shoot prisoners, Tel Belo, a medic in the army, wonders if his actions in the territories caused a young boy to become a suicide bomber. Tanya Reinhart, Israeli journalist contributes a historical perspective. Refuseniks is a moving portrait of men and women who were willing to risk imprisonment to take a stand against the occupation by refusing to serve. Men and women who came to believe that this stand was crucial to their own humanity and to the future of their country.

10. Thank you, thank you! Many good links in there. I'd read about...
...Fighters for Peace in a YNet news article, I believe- very heartening. And the debate between Shlomo and Norman is so useful it should be a sticky at the top of I/P.

Thanks again! I'll check out the book as well...
