Impeachment: Saving the Republic is NOT a waste of time!
The House can hold hearings to determine if an impeachable offense or offenses have been committed by George Bush and/or Dick Cheney. The hearings will be televised. As the American people see the vast evidence of law breaking and deception by Bush/Cheney, their opinion will change and many will see impeachment not just as a possibility, but as a necessity.

When the House, under Chairman Peter Rodino, and the Senate, under Chairman Sam Ervin, held hearings on Nixon's law breaking, opinion polls showed that most Americans did not feel that impeachment was necessary, even when they didn't like Nixon. After the evidence began to come out that Nixon had broken the law and engaged in criminal activity, public opinion began to move in the direction of impeachment. This culminated in Rep. Rodino voting in favor of Articles of Impeachment for Nixon's cover-up of the Watergate break-in and other abuses of power.

We must move public opinion in the direction of impeachment, and the only way to do that is by presenting evidence that will convince a majority of Americans that Bush and Cheney must be impeached if we are to uphold the Constitution and save the Republic.

Were she alive today, Barbara Jordan would not hesitate to stand for the Constitution against a President that has placed himself above the law.

1. What makes you think the hearings would be televised?

2. They would be a major news event
Not even Bush would dare pull the plug on a Congressional hearing investigating allegations of law breaking and other abuses of power by the President and the Vice-President of the United States. Pulling the plug would be an admission of guilt!

5. Sometimes we must do what is right even when it looks like we will fail
It wasn't that long ago when we were jeered for marching against Bush's plans to go to war in Iraq, and we were drowned in a sea of Support the Troops magnetic ribbons. Where are the crowds that used to cheer for the war?

19. The Constitution is more important than partisanship
without it, we lose our liberties, we end up with dictatorship, and we turn our backs on all those that went before us to defend our Republic against all enemies.

9. What makes you think hearings will even happen?
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 08:26 PM by LiberalPartisan
Honestly - this is a complete waste of energy.

First both the House and Senate have to go Dem. in 2006 for this to even have a remote chance of happening.
There may be an outside chance the House will go Dem but the Senate will in all probablity remain repub.

24. Sadly, you're probably right, They wouldn't be televised.
Had Tricky Dick knocked out the Fairness Doctrine before they could bring him to trial, his hearings probably wouldn't have been televised. Once Reagan stripped that bit of FCC oversight, television news became a morality-free zone. Broadcasters no longer have to think of themselves as holders of a public trust. Their allegiance lies with their profits and shareholders, not the viewing public.

Watch out now, take care
Beware of falling swingers
Dropping all around you
The pain that often mingles
In your fingertips
Beware of darkness

Watch out now, take care
Beware of the thoughts that linger
Winding up inside your head
The hopelessness around you
In the dead of night

Beware of sadness
It can hit you
It can hurt you
Make you sore and what is more
That is not what you are here for

Watch out now, take care
Beware of soft shoe shufflers
Dancing down the sidewalks
As each unconscious sufferer
Wanders aimlessly
Beware of Maya

Watch out now, take care
Beware of greedy leaders
They take you where you should not go
While Weeping Atlas Cedars
They just want to grow, grow and grow
Beware of darkness (beware of darkness)

7. I firmly believe investigations will yield such evidence
that cannot be ignored. This administration has operated behind a veil of secrecy, and I simply cannot believe that Americans would be fine with their crimes once exposed to sunlight.

It is incumbent upon our elected officials to do their duty and follow the constitution by initiating due process vis-a-vis investigations as oversight. I have no doubt that will lead to impeachment.

Accountability, a reckoning so to speak, will be cathartic for America.

11. I nominated this thread because of the following:
read post 85 in this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2740921&mesg_id=2741358

And if those reasons don't convince you then

this is worth a vote for a non DLC take on the question of impeachment..

20. Written by lawyers & not DLC apologist and "bipartisan" bystanders.
These are laws that have been broken and cannot be expressed as purely an election year gimmick,
the nation should demand it, and god knows the world demands it
if we are to ever regain any semblance that the world once look up to us for the birthplace of a democracy
after many years of imperial rule.

22. We must also demand no pardons for war criminals!
For the sake's of our children, we must insist that those Bush regime officials responsible for war crimes and human rights violation, will be arrested and extradited to the International Crimes Court at The Hague. How could we prosecute a Milosevitch while giving a pass to a Bush or a Cheney.

A Presidential pardon does not prevent prosecution by ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

I'd humbly submit post 19, and post 99 in the same spirit.

What you said, IChing!

It is NOT tilting at windmills.

It is NOT an exercise in futility.

It is NOT a hopeless quest.

It is NOT a "you can't touch this" topic. Not anymore.

It is NO LONGER an unrealistic, unattainable pipe dream.

And it is the most urgent business a people of faith - in REAL freedom, the Constitution, genuine legitimate (and ACTIVELY SOUGHT, NOT FORCIBLY IMPOSED) democracy, truth, justice, and what we all once recognized as the "American Way" - MUST pursue. If we're to have any honor remaining to us, at all. If we don't, we have no right to face the rest of the world and claim to call the shots or say we know better, or that our way is better. We fail as Americans if we do nothing to rectify this.

13. I agree with you ... and before anyone says anything about Nixon .....
.... keep in mind that, by today's standards, if he was a criminal, he would have been a simple street thug purse snatcher. The Major Organized Crime Syndicate in charge these days wrote the fucking book on crime. What Nixon did was NOTHING by comparison.

I would bet anything that polls for/against impeachment would be 70% for if hearings were held and televised.

27. George Bush is a war criminal -- Impeachment is too good for him.
But if that's all we can get, I'll take it.

I want to see this piece of shit take the stand and testify UNDER OATH without Cheney's hand up his ass telling him what to say.

I want to watch him squirm and stutter and try to lie his way out of trouble.

Then, I want to see Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz, and the rest of the neocon regime get what they deserve...a 12x12 prison cell.

33. No pardons for Bush and his henchmen!
They should be extradited to The Hague to face trial for their crimes against humanity. Given the choice of being tried at The Hague, where there is no death penalty, or in the US where they could be sentenced to death, I am sure that Bush & Co would rather be tried by the International Crimes Court.

We must insist that our Presidential Democratic candidates categorically declare that if elected President, they will not pardon Bush & Co.
