Congressman: We Should ‘Prevent Those Who Commit Adultery or Get a Divorce
From Running for Office’

"Today, the House of Representative is spending the day debating a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. (It has no chance of becoming law, since the Senate rejected it last month.)

On the House floor, Rep. Lincoln Davis (D-TN) said he was opposed the amendment but only because it didn’t go far enough. (UPDATE: Davis voted in favor of the amendment.) Davis said Congress should “outlaw divorce in this country” and “outlaw adultery and make it a felony.” In addition, Davis said, “we should also prevent those who commit adultery, or get a divorce, from running for office.”

Davis said it was important to “go after the other threats to the institution” not just the threat from homosexuals.

There are currently at least 29 divorced members of Congress. There is no official data on how many members have committed adultery..."

In your face Repub hypocrites.

1. If her was opposed, why did he vote in favor?
I'm very confused, and thus not sure how to take what I otherwise thought was some beautiful sarcasm.

2. Is he saying this to point out their hypocrisy or is he that crazy?
I used to always say we should ban divorce to save marriage---until I ran into some people in a class who agreed and thought it was a great idea. One even said no fault divorce was the worst thing that ever happened to this country (I guess she skipped the section on slavery in her US history class). The crazy part is that all of them were under 25 who were in agreement.

3. ALways a good idea to go to the linked article
UPDATE: Davis now says his “intent was to point out the purely partisan nature and timing of the amendment.” If so, why did he vote for it?

5. Outlaw divorce and folks will not marry.
Very few will marry if adultery is a felony.

7. Interesting quote from a poster at thinkprogress.org:
"Republicans should not be allowed to adopt because they raise intolerant children."
