WASHINGTON - Senate leaders sent a strong signal to the U.S. House on Wednesday that they are unlikely to agree to a coastal oil and gas drilling proposal that differs from their own bill.
If the Senate and House fail to reach a compromise, then lawmakers hoping to open Florida's west coast to drilling would have to wait and try again next year.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist favors the targeted, focused and "carefully crafted" bill, which is restricted to the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and will do whatever he can - including refusing to consider amendments - to limit debate this week.
"When it comes to expanding the bill and doing things the House may have done, it's impossible at this juncture," Frist said.
Sen. Pete Domenici, the bill's chief sponsor and chairman of the energy committee, said he does not think the Senate has enough votes to pass the broader, more sweeping bill that the House has already passed. "It's clear that anything that changes this Senate bill very much won't pass," said Domenici, R-N.M.
