I shit you not: he said seeing condoms on sale in the hotel gift shop was a true sign for hopefulness in Lebanon, as was the fact that they have a gay bar in downtown Beirut (the roof is on fire?). This all bodes well for lebanon, to be sure. On that I agree with him. But I was left picking my jaw off the floor after witnessing such brazen hypocrisy, because of course the fundamentalists here are trying their damndest to outlaw contraception and - huh? - gay bars? I thought conservatives (pretended) to hate those? I mean, are you fucking kidding me?!? Needless to say, Chris Matthews didn't pick up on the mind-numbing contradiction of the whole thing.
