Call In Day Yields Seven New Cosponsors for Cease Fire

Thank you to everyone who made phone calls to their Representatives in connection with Tuesday's call in day, and for forwarding the UFPJ call-in day alert.

UFPJ worked with at least 7 other national groups (many of them UFPJ members) on a call-in day, asking members to call thier Representatives in support of Rep. Kucinich's H.Con.Res.450. The bill calls for an immediate cessation of violence in Israel, Lebonon and the Gaza Strip, and for multi-party negotiations to secure a lasting peace.

As a result of the call-in day, 7 members signed on as co-sponsors:
Rep. Jackson-Lee (D-TX)
Rep. Rahall (D-WV)
Rep. George Miller (D-CA)
Rep. DeFazio (D-OR)
Rep. Owens (D-NY)
Rep. Moore (D-WI)
Rep. McKinney (D-GA)

Thank you to those of you who forwarded the call widely, and to those of you who reported back on your calls. Based on report backs we received, the grand prize for activism on this alert goes to the state of Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice.

Also based on reports we recieved, we know that very many calls were generated to the following members:
Baldwin (D-WI) - to say thank you for co-sponsoring the resolution
Hart (R-PA)
Mica (R-FL)
Van Hollen (D-MD)
Green (R-WI)
Ryan (R-WI)
Nadler (D-NY)

Some of the comments we received:
Thanks for the notice. Listening to an NPR report yesterday of the inhuman slaughter of women and children in Lebanon was heart rending and I know that I must speak up and add my voice to the call for peace and justice. - Washington (state)

I called my Congressman from Colorado ( Tom Tancredo) and spoke at length to his aide. I also told him of how I reacted in 1982 when Israel invaded Lebanon, and Ariel Sharon allowed the local militia to slaughter over 1,000 unarmed civilians in two refugee camps in Lebanon. I am Jewish, and want everybody to know that many Jews like myself respect all people and will not ignore the criminal acts of people of my religion, or those of any other religion to go unnoticed.Acts of violence by anyone is wrong.Period. - Colorado

A national campaign to would be great. There may be millions who wouldn't dare put up such a sign, but who silently agree and are affected by knowing that there are others out there who publicly make such statements. I have a Brooklyn Parents for Peace sign up, very colorful, full of dancing people calling for No War, but I think this recent Israeli war has just pushed me into the black-and-white stage. - New York
