Is Israel losing much of its American support?
Not only here on DU but across America, people are angry and in deep disagreement with the latest Israeli decision to bomb and invade Lebanon. Is this a permanent damage? Israel needs the support of the American people. The threat of losing American support is a much larger threat than Hezbollah. It seems that Israel, with all its weaponry, is letting its little head rule the big head.

7. What a depressing attitude by a typical American
64% think Israel and the Arab nations will never live in peace
47% approve of the way Bush has handled the situation
48% think Israel's response to Hezbollah is about right
61% tihnk the conflict is likely to lead to a larger war

There's such a fatalistic "there's permanent war in the Middle East" attitude. People think Israel is doing the right thing, and they think it will lead to a larger war. If they thought Israel's response was going to stop the war from spreading, I could bear it. But instead they're happy with a larger war.

2. The media has been largely behind Israel's latest Lebanon incursion...
...for every reporter in Lebanon, there's 10 in Israel. I haven't seen much of a backlash against the Israeli position, beyond the insane bastard shooting up the Jewish community center in Seattle yesterday.

call-ins, I'd say it's about five to one _against_ Israel's actions. Seems to come as a surprise to some of the hosts.

21. C-Span call-ins tend to be people at the political extremes.
Watch an average morning of call-ins and tell me that's not the case.

not really 'winning' at this point is setting in.

4. It is Interesting
When I mention that not everyone (thinking of DU) supports Israel, people look at me like I'm crazy--liberals and conservatives. I haven't seen support drop at all. I imagine this Seattle shooting will encourage support, if anything.

6. A lot of people are AFRAID to voice opposition to Israel and for
good reason. But beneath the surface and behind closed doors across middle and rural America their is little support for Israel as many still cling to real racism and anti-semitism. It would be much less support for Israel among many were it not a fact the racism you can see (skin color specifically) is more powerful than real ethnic racism. Because Muslims are generally thought of by the masses as being brown or dark skinned, this keeps the anti-semitism against Jews in check as it is much easier to be against the brown-skinned "terrorists" as our administration and our media keep telling us in various ways than against the Jews who look like us. The people you see on TV running the Israeli government, and speaking on their behalf are very carefully shown to be of white skin and very EU-looking. A showing of the true Israeli population would startle most Americans.

8. Reminds me of an exit poll.
We had a black dem running for governor many years ago; the exit polls had him winning by a landslide. He did win but by a very small margin--white Dems came out of the polls saying they voted for him, but they didn't! It was way before black box voting. There is terrible anti-semitism and huge racism out there still. It is amazing to me that in this day and age it is so rampant. Unless you're a minority, you rarely see it and even less often accept it.

11. yeah, right?
what was I thinking. :+

Really, though, blood lust is indulgence in folly. The most difficult path a warrior can choose is the Path of Peace. And by Peace, I mean the classic definition, as in tranquility and happiness and so on. I don't mean the neocon vision of peace, which is a black, smoking and barren planet drained of all it's natural resources, with the populace enslaved, dead or in reeducation camps learning the Hard Fist of Love that is the neocon Jesus.

16. I am ashamed of Israel and scared to death of Hagee
I am an Orthodox Jew who is ashamed of how Israel has mutated into an out of control Frankenstein state. I cannot support the insane clowns who are guiding it to destruction, especially those who play into the hands of pied pipers like John Hagee. They cannot see that Hagee and his ilk can't wait for the day when ALL Jews are deported to Israel and only 144,000 male virgins escape God's execution.

Hagee makes Hitler look insignificant.

19. Ned Lamont
has come out in th last two days in support of Israel.

I think that sucks. He's running as an antidote to the Republican loving in favor of War mongering and Totalitarianism Lieberman. If he supports Israel's war crime actions, why should I bother supporting him in the first place?

Is there any major politician in America that at least questions Israel's "kill them all and let God sort it out" actions?
