Bad news on Ohio (For Republicans) National Review goes Boo Hoo Hoo!

Bad news on Ohio

Bob Novak reports on the state of the GOP in Ohio...not good:

Republican senators at last week's Tuesday luncheon meeting were stunned by news from Ohio of the Columbus Dispatch poll showing Sen. Mike DeWine behind his Democratic challenger, Rep. Sherrod Brown, by 8 percentage points.

The GOP senators had taken for granted that Senators Rick Santorum in Pennsylvania and Conrad Burns in Montana are in trouble for re-election. However, it was widely assumed in Washington that DeWine was in relatively good shape because Brown is too liberal for Ohio.

Ohio, long regarded as the national key to Republican fortunes, is shaping up as a disaster area for the GOP in the wake of Gov. Bob Taft's unpopular administration. The Dispatch poll has Democratic Rep. Ted Strickland leading Secretary of State Ken Blackwell by 20 percentage points for governor.

And Ohio Democrats are enjoying the Republican misfortutne. From Sunday's Columbus Dispatch:

The nearly 100 Democratic Party volunteers gathered at state party headquarters yesterday morning heard rousing speeches from candidates, including a fresh-faced healthcare attorney and a battlehardened political veteran.

One thing was clear: These aren't the unknown, unfunded ballot-fillers that Ohio Democrats have often sent to predictable general-election defeats in recent years.

2. Republican Fortunes?
You mean as in stealing coin collections that fund the state coffers. Or perhaps you mean stealing elections for Repugs that can't get elected otherwise.

7. They'll try... but hopefully..
The polls will put the scare into Diebold..

Or the fact that they are losing a fortune right now > http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/business/15124421.htm

Or the fact that they're being sued from one end of the nation to the other..

<-- Wally O'Dell may be fearing that the longer this goes on, the more likely this will happen -->

13. As long as Bush has the Courts packed
with right wing idiots law suits against Diebold are just dreams. A Molitov coctail in the dead of night through the window of corporate headquarters might make a difference. As their stock prices decline, bankruptcy may be the remedy. But others will fill the gap as long as we the people don't demand, without compromise, paper ballots deposited in transparent locked boxes that are counted in public at the end of the day.
All electronic voting devices need to be destroyed. And yes I'd be willing to have a purple thumb for a day or so if it would provide ballot security. When all the votes are verified, we win.

31. Actually I would feel better if someone else were saying it. Novak is
notorious at the game of sounding the alarm to rally the Republican faithful in a tight race. Next month he will come back with a column talking about how the Republicans are returning to the fold and how the Democrats may have missed their chance in 2006. He is best ignored. He either states the obvious or he shills for the home team. The obvious right now is that Ohio Republicans are in trouble. We don't need Novak to tell us that. But given the fact that Blackwell is running the election, nothing should be taken for granted in any statewide race. DeWine is going to be difficult to knock off under these circumstances - not impossible, but difficult. I would put Brown's chances about where Kerry's were at this time in 2004 of winning Ohio.

8. I live in Columbus, OH
Headline 11/9/2006 Columbus, Dispatch

Despite being down in the polls by 20 and 11 points respectively
both Ken Blackwell and Senator Mike DeWine won
the races yesterday. The 372 percent turn outs in
republican areas of the state was seen as key to their
victories. The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio
National Guard were called out to put down terrorist
rioting by people who said that they were kept from
voting by members of Blackwater Security Company.

President Bush was reported to have called for the air strikes
on the al Qaeda of Ohio's, headquarters in Athens, Ohio.
Gay Terrorists there were reported to have been driving
people to the polls. Arrests and shootings were also reported
statewide of Islamo-Fascist poll watchers and exit poll takers.

The Department of Homeland Security and NSA have approved of
this news report.

In other news the Ohio State Buckeyes are looking forward towards
their annual meeting with the University of Michigan.

28. That's what I expect, too
The election here in 2004 was downright scary. The Repugs were happily intimidating voters at the polls in addition to all the other fun things they did to make sure the election went the "right" way. Blackwell is corrupt and connected. Diebold will do their dirty deeds, and Ohio will drop to 50 out of 50 in ALL measures (except of course for foreclosures where WE'RE NUMBER ONE!!! WHOO-HOOO!)

I would love to see the bums thrown out, but that would mean a REAL election here, and I'm not holding my breath. :eyes:

12. Great news but remember who owns the voting machines in Ohio
You also have to take into account who built the machines and their connections with in the state and nationally.

I hope we can take it back from these bastards, but I am afraid that I have see too much in this state to be overly optimistic.

16. I'll believe it when I see it.
The GOP has already accused the Dem's of voter registration suppression! Give me a break! It is the world of opposites in Ohio. The republicans commit the crimes and then with no imagination at all blame the Dem's for the same thing. My husband is nervous as he promised me that if (when) Blackwell wins we will move out of this depressed state that has been run by criminals for far too long! Kim

21. ..maybe.. if the DNC had any brains, they would contract exit polls by a
..unquestionable agency to conduct it.

if the exit polls do not match, if the ballots can not be authenticated, then there is evidence of election tampering right there.

The DNC should expect this, and plan according strategy.

20. Eureka! , the Dean grassroots plan really works!

to win you have to have a strategy in all 50 states, and a local organization to get voters active in thier elections.

Ohio in general is hurting badly. It should be a giveme victory, but due to past incompetance by the DNC and leadership of DLC, it BECAME a republican stronghold.

thus when the votes are stolen, lost, forgotten, changed, manipulated, etc...somebody, somewhere might sit up and say, "Say...something's fishy here..."

25. Elections in Ohio are rigged!!!!!
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 11:47 AM by Mrspeeker
The only good news I could possibly hear coming out of that state would be that #1 no electronic voting machines would be used and #2 there will be no more redistricting #3 Blackwell resigns and goes to prison for his acts of voting fraud #4 and finally there will be a hand ballot count monitored by someone else besides the GOP!

Lets face it, they gave BUSH the win in 2006 by cheating the voting system!

30. I only care about RESULTS.
I don't believe pre-polls or exit polls, I want final results. And those final results better NOT have that bible-thumping wackjob Crackwell as the new Governor. Until Ohioans start getting smarter and say "NO" to Shitpublicans, as they haven't been doing for decades while the state went to complete shit, I remain pessimistic. I can take comfort with these numbers that an election steal would almost assure that he and his minions get caught. I don't expect the media to change anytime soon, but should Crackwell win, it will make them look stupendously foolish trying to defend how he possibly and legally overcame a 20-percent deficit in a few months with his hate-baiting, non-relevant issue campaign.
