The polls show Dem gains in US Statehouses. A plea to the governors to be:
Dear newly minted Democratic Governor,

Tentative congratulations on what is shaping up to be your win.

As soon as you people are sworn in, go down the hall to the elevator in your respective statehouses, push the appropriate button to get to the floor where your secretary of state's has an office suite and ride the elevator. When you get off, flex your shoulders, rotate your head a bit and get loose and ready. March - don't walk, march - down the hall to that secretary of state's office and walk in like you own the place (cuz, pretty much, you do). Cancel all leaves and tell the secretray of state and the staff of said secretary of state that they ain't leavin' until every voter in your state has COMPLETE CONFIDENCE that his or her vote will be counted HONESTLY, FAIRLY, and out in the bright light of day.

Thanks for listening.

Your admirer,
Stinky

1. Bravo, HtS!
And while we're at it, have the states with Dem guvs and legislatures already done this?

I know Montana and New Mexico have new laws. Anybody else?

4. In most states governors don't own the Secretary of State's office
as Secretaries of State are elected seperately. The Governors can line item veto spending on voting machines and the like though.

5. So?
This is still a great message to send.

I still haven't figured out how the hell in Md. a republican governor came out against Diebold and the bill for paper ballots was passed unanimously in the house but defeated in the Senate.

6. Yanno, Hoot ... I live in Maryland .... and **I** can't figure it out.
On the upside, this is a state with a Repub Governor and a Dem legislature. Some of our Dems are pretty ossified, having been in office far too long for anyone's good. They oppose just to oppose. On balance, given the current state of things, that's not all bad. But its not all good, either.

And to go back a bit more .... it was the Maryland **Dems** who brought in Diebold to start with and who resisted all evidence of their vulnerability.

7. And now the big flip-flop...
They swore up and down that Diebold machines were infallible. And now they all but reject the machines in favor of paper ballots, citing them as infallible...

Let's hope they don't fuck up again this time.

COUNT ALL THE VOTES!!!!!!!!!

8. I know.
I'm in Western Md., (near Fredneck) so you might think I'm in a different state ;)

My rude awakening was during the 2004 primary, I had no clue the machines were changed,, and at the time I thought I was following the news.

I still have a hell of a time finding out what's happening at the state level.

9. Check our own DU state forum.
It moves slow, but there's often good info there.
