Lieberman is proving party loyalty still does matter...
While his rah rah support of George Bush and the war is the catalyst that caused former support Ned Lamont to oppose him, it is Lieberman's disloyalty that is gonna cost him the election.

I believe had he not announced an independent bid he would have won the primary and the election. I think his "spit in the face" of Democratic voters, telling them he would not respect their decision is what is gonna sink him finally..

So for those that think parties are irrelevent, I say look to Joe Lieberman for a good counter example.

1. I think you're correct
I'm not 100% certain Lieberman will lose, but his threat to go Independent is probably what has made this race a dead heat.

12. I think the NYT article and endorsement
of Lamont will carry a lot of weight. Maybe even negate the Clinton support.

13. we'll see
Lieberman got the support of the two leading CT papers this weekend, too. And Clinton's popularity among Democrats is at 88%.

14. This won't be the first time Bill has made a fool of himself. I don't
think he'll accomplish anything other than embarrass all who still have some respect left for him.

Bar Bush's "adopted son" should stay home.

He has more than a few people who respect him.

17. Hell, I'd say I'm a total supporter of his to a pollster. But if he pulls
this one off for the Bush Crime Family and his new mom, then that will be the last straw as far as I'm concerned.

18. I'm sure he'll miss your .00000 00000000 0000000000000001% input.
But Clinton carrie lots of weight in a blue state. Might not make enough difference for Lieberman, but it certainly will help.

21. Good. And you can continue to support him on his raising funds
for disaster victims with Poppy Bush and his crusade for ... ?

Can't think of a major reform he's pushing now; but there must be something. Even despicable old Bob Barr of the impeachment travesty has become a major spokesperson against the shredding of our Constitution by the Bush Crime Family. Maybe Bill and Barr could come together on that issue. Now that would be a better team than Bill and Poppy; but I'm not sure Ma Bush would approve.

Or perhaps he could speak out against the corporate rape of America. Or the subversion of our electoral system by Diebold et al.

There are so many things he could be doing which would be so much more benificial to the nation than helping Joe Lieberman back into the Senate.

2. third parties irrelevant?
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 12:48 PM by welshTerrier2
it may be true that Lieberman will be "punished" by Democrats for his disloyalty ...

i would not, however, conclude that the lesson from the CT Senate race is that third parties are irrelevant ... in fact, unfortunately, the opposite may very well be the case ...

Lieberman stands a very good chance of winning as a third party candidate ... i hope it doesn't happen but he is certainly "relevant" if he choose to do so ...

on edit: is the OP suggesting third parties are relevant or irrelevant? maybe i've misunderstood the post ...
