What's a Democrat to do?
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 02:07 PM by Husb2Sparkly
No doubt you are all familiar with the House's vote to approve a bill that raises the minimum wage and gives a VERY small handful of rich American families more in tax relief than the entire fucking country spends on many domestic programs. We're talking about billions and billions in tax avoidance for the richest .. what? .... 2500 families in the US? These families who paid for a despicable public relations and lobbying effort to pitch the idea that small family farms were the issue, all the while hiding their own selfish involvement. The **fact** that NOT ONE FUCKING FARM has ever been sold for back taxes is simply not mentioned. "It could happen" is, I suppose their fall-back position.

In the meantime, the fat fuck on the left (not to be confused with the dumb fuck on the right) in this picture pulled a fast one in the congressional house he controls.

He just attached the WelfareForRichGreedyMotherFuckers Bill to the bill that would see the first increase in the minimum wage in ten years.

Now this whole shitpile goes to the Senate. Where it will die.

But in the meantime, the Repubs have a new talking point

"Dems killed an increase in the minimum wage. Hey ... we tried  "

Well, this pissed off old Barney Frank, who had these eloquesnt words for Phat Denny:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jPCi0drnyo

And so went the political theater that is DC.

But you know what? The Repubs could actually use this in the midterms. They can say 'Dems stopped the Minimum Wage increase."

Which leaves our side to ....... what? Explain? Sound bite vs dissertation? Hahahaha. Wutta joke that would be.

So what's a Dem to do?

We need EVERY dem who gets a second of face time on teevee to address this on every appearance. Maybe this ought to be the rule du jour:

Answer the question you want, not the question that got asked.

We **really** can lose on this deal, folks.

on edit ... my link seems not to be working. It is also here, in this thread ... the two funny looking guys in lab coats:

8. It works on your machine because you've already been to the url directly
where the image is being hosted, and so your browser has cached the image. Anyone else trying to load the image from a http_referrer hailing from democraticunderground.com (instead of the domain name of the host that has the image) will not see the image but a broken link icon. This happens because the site hosting the image is blocking http referrals that don't match its own domain. That's a very common practice at so-called free webpage hosts like geocities, tripod et al. Http referrals can be blacklisted in blanket fashion as already described, or they can domain specific. Let's say I don't want asshole freepers stealing my images, so I can block freerepublic.com as a referring domain for files residing on my webserver.
You can test to see whether an image you want to link to will be seen by others who read your post by clearing your browser's cache (and also not having the page where you saw the image open anymore) then pasting the url for the image in your post and previewing the post to see if the image appears in the preview.
If the site with the image you want to share with others is blocking outside referrers, you will need to download the image file and then upload it to a file hosting site where you have an account, then use the url for your copy of the file in your post.

3. Your picture isn't showing up, but I can imagine which fucks you
are referring to. It's mind boggling, isn't it? That they would deny a few crumbs to the neediest to ensure all the mansions stay in the family when the fat cat dies.

4. Dems should be pre-emptive.

Get on talk shows, give press releases, press conferences. Get local ploiticians involved. Hit the Blogs. Talk about this BEFORE the repugs can use it.

"Republicans kill minimum wage increase" do it now, don't wait until October.

17. Get on talk shows?
Where they are outnumbered 5-1 by wingers? Press releases? To the 3-4 left-leaning newpapers in the whole fucking US? Press conferences?

back to reality, d_p.

18. I think it is possible for Dems to do an end run around 'the media'
If they can get on the cablenewz shows, fine. But how about getting on the likes of Letterman and (blech) Leno and Oprah, etc. Keep the banter light, do a silly thing or two and then get serious and talk strongly about real issues.

The fact is, we have NO friends in the media so we need to insinuate ourselves as we're able. I suspect the palace guard at these sorts of shows is less adept than at the politicalyakker shows ... at least for now.

the fat/dumb fucks of which you speak

I figured it would be such a bit of political theater on the minimum wage legislation

after all it is an election year

but I do hope all the Dems on TV shout it to the rooftops!

6. Yow! Great speech by Barney Frank, btw.
I think you've got a great response right there -- get every Dem talking about this whenever he or she is asked about ANY question! -- but I wonder if we're organized enough to make that happen.

Ugh, it's a new outrage every day with these people. I'm half tempted to say, "Fuck it! Pass the bill!" The minimum wage workers will get some relief and the Republicans commitment to squandering our nation's wealth during a time of war and handing it over to an elite will be well on display for all to see. Let the American people see that *this* is what happens when Republicans are in charge.

7. Try this:
The Dems in Congress worked on passing a real increase to the minimum wage for the first time in X years. Instead, the do nothing Repub leadership tried to give billions in scarce tax dollars to the children of the richest people in America.

9. Shouldn't they already have a bill written up somewhere?
I mean.. Democrats have been proposing this for eons now..

Can't they call a najor press conference and whip out the bill THEY created, thereby showing the public the difference in the two?

Why Oh Why isn't it that easy?!?!?
