What does this mean for Lamont/Lieberman?
Folks switching from unaffiliated to Democratic. What impact will that have on the race? Any thoughts from those in the know?

As primary nears, voters join Democratic Party

STAMFORD -- Now more than ever, it's fashionable to be a card-carrying Democrat.

Voters are joining the party so they can vote in the Aug. 8 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate and the governor's race. Only registered Democrats are eligible to vote.

About 230 Stamford residents have switched their voter registration from unaffiliated to Democrat since early May, according to data provided by Alice Fortunato, Democratic registrar of voters in Stamford.

1. Hopefully...
...it doesn't mean that Republicans are joining the Democratic party just to pitch support behind their parties best friend, Lieberman...

4. the article does include this sentence
The deadline for Republicans to become Democrats was May.

Who knew there was a deadline for Republicans to become Democrats?

8. At this point the only people that can become
registered Democrats in time for the primary are new voters and unaffiliated voters. For anyone registered as either a Republican or an Independent (which is considered a political party here) the deadline was May 8 because it takes 90 days to take effect. For the new and unaffiliated voters they have up until noon on Aug. 7.

6. I registered repub so I could vote against Jesse Helms twice in one year

Hopefully it's not enough to make a difference if it is Lieberman supporters.

2. Not enough data to know .......
Stamford (and most all of Faifield County except the big cities) is a wealthy area that leans Republican. I'd be interested to know if that is a local phemonenon of if it were the same statewide.

3. I recently switched from independent
to Democrat. I was debating since there's a bigger chance that my vote would be stolen as a democrat but then I am not able to pick during the primaries. I am still voting using an absentee ballot.

5. The window for switching is long closed.
I believe anyone wanting to vote in the Dem primary would've had to register Dem 90 days previous.

9. it would seem your wife...
...is more representative of the trend; my take is that unaffiliated voters are registering as Dem's to insure a Lamont victory, a counter-weight, if you will, to the rank-and-file D's who will vote for the organization-backed incumbent out of habit, if not necessarily conviction. Bottom line: this should bode well for Lamont (if only he'd take a more objective, even-handed stand on Israel...sigh...).
