this site? I have two good friends whom I just can't get to see the light.

I really like this site and was going to maybe use one item at a time.

1. Freepers, by definition, are impervious to facts and common sense.
Good luck. :)

13. Reuters did pull an obviously edited photo. And...

...there are others by the same photographer, who they've now suspended, that are also suspicious. But the one that was pulled was so poorly edited job that it begs the question of how it got by Reuters, in the first place.

18. They had to pull it. It was too obvious. And they were right to do so...
...in any case.

2. If you have time to kill on something futile and pointless, go ahead.
You're probably the one who will learn a lesson, that being that these people have something resembling the consistency of cement between their ears.

3. There is a book....
called "Confessions of a Former Dittohead" by Jim Derych, which I just read. You might find it useful.

4. I don't even try to do stuff like that any more. I lost friends.

Actually several friends that I had never really talked about politics with, and I was surprised to find out how much they support Bush, and Cheney, and the whole neocon thing, and now they consider me like a terrorist sympathizer and a traitor. But the worst part is, when all that happened, I had not read as much as I have now, or thought about it all that much so all I said to them was something like I didn't think they were doing a good job making Iraq into a democracy.

So if they knew that now I don't think we should ever have invaded Iraq, and I don't even think they ever meant to make it into a democracy, they would hate me even more.

Anyway sorry to rant but I am not sure it is a good idea to try to talk the freepers out of it, because they are so extreme about it, and they might even try to get you in trouble. I wish there would be more marches and things, I don't know if that would help, they say it did with VietNam, but I think marches would be safer than talking to your freeper friends about your opinions.

5. Welcome to DU
But good luck on convincing freepers of anything/
I have been talking to one for the last (believe it or not) 10 years and have made no progress at all in all that time.
Although I will admit I do know that he now is not so enamored of bush and is becoming concerned, but who isn't

7. i had a life long dear friend i finally said goodbye to...
she is mormon..and has no reasoning abilities, unless her church tells her..she can not make decisions on her own..
before the 2004 election i sat whith her and went line by line through the * lies..and her response to me after sitting for 3 hours discussing the * lies??

did i think they could "fix" Teressa Kerry up they way they fixed up Hillary...

i kid you not..

thats the last time i spoke to my life long friend...

and i will never speak to her again..i got up and told her how fucked up she is..and how she is fucking my nation..and i walked out...

never to look back..

most of these people who follow this regime, who are truely good people, i believe , have given up all sense of reality..and all reasoning abilities..and common sense..

and how can one possibly help another person gain those attributes back??

unless it hits their household directly..and they suffer in some sense...i don't believe you can...

just my 2 cents!

19. Personally, I'm Catholic
and a Democrat. I'm pretty sure what connects most of us here is tolerance and respect for each others' beliefs. Not all, but most.

Welcome to DU.

banned abortion. They've been in charge for all these years.

lost in an Apriori Loop where any input at any lever or subject comes up with the same conclusion if it looks like you dont agree with them.. and spout the daily party talking points.. issued over their freeping web site or CNN, Faux. MSN, etc

unless you are really masochistic i dont see any reason to bother..

i just drop a que they may click on later.. but argue i do not bother, they enjoy it too much.. it just encourages them

17. righters say we're "projecting" whenever we say they're nuts
Of course they're insane. When they say we're projecting well, that's just their projecting.

9. Thanks all. I will continue to email them bits here and there but
continue to avoid heated discussions. I just can't get over how I grew up with one of them, same neighborhood and economics. They both are not religious. Both ex military. Both are pro choice. Just can't figure out what their key reason is. The thing I mostly hear is how Dems are wimps.

10. Keep listening to them.
Then you will know which concerns of theirs need to be addressed. For example, why do they call the Dems wimps? No matter how they answer, don't argue (at first), just listen and reflect back what they said. "Oh? You're worried about another terrorist attack and think the Dems won't be willing to protect us?" etc. or maybe "Oh? You'd have more respect for the Dems if they came out full force against the war?"

I wouldn't write off your friends. There have been many recent threads on DU about life-long Republican neighbors and family members saying they no longer support Bush.

If we don't listen to Bush supporters' concerns, how will we ever win them over?

14. Slavish devotion to authority figures cannot be changed
with reason. Keep trying anyway. Suggest books written by Republicans like Kevin Phillips, John Dean (Dean's now an independent). Get them "Imperial Hubris" and "Jawbreaker." Both are Republicans who are not afraid to tell the truth. "Jawbreaker" will suck them in because it is a war story. It won't be until the end that they see how the administration stopped them from capturing OBL. Take off the dust cover.

20. My old roommate
is also my dentist.
I travel far to see him as he is a crack dentist.
He's also a 29er, one of those people who will believe absolutely anything off the Fox News Channel.
The layer of ignorance has been impenetrable these past years.
I may have finally made a crack in it.
He blames Bill Clinton for everything wrong with Republican rule.
Indeed he suggests the big dog put moles in every agency to oppose dubyas policies. (ridiculous)
The last time he said it, I suggested the reason that President Carter's Presidency went so badly was Nixon's 5th columnists.
I thought a saw daylight for a moment while he jammed up trying to phrase a reply.
Perhaps other will find this approach useful.
I don't believe in Clinton moles, of course.
But Nixon was an evil and bitter man. He plotted and schemed until they buried him.
Of course he planted moles.

21. freepers enjoy being ignorant
that's what makes them freepers. Take a good look at their web site - JAYSUS WHAT A PIECE OF GARBAGE IT IS - yet they still contribute money for it - if this web site stayed looking like that, they'd never see a cent from me.

23. I actually have some neighbors that are right wingers....
not one of them is a freeper nor has ever heard of that site. Why do we continuously advertise for them? Let's drop the moniker and go back to calling them repukes. I have to admit, my neighbors are very nice people....they are old time country folk and just terribly naieve...

24. There's a vast difference between the freepers and old-school republicans.
I have converted several old-schoolers...they are now some of the more fervent members of my group.Freepers, imho, lack the abstract reasoning skills to be able to separate fact from emotion.
