TAMPA, Fla. -- An anticipatory buzz fills the room. Six crisp American flags, erect as soldiers, line the dais. More than an hour before the vice president's arrival, the GOP faithful stand at the ready.

Never mind that Dick Cheney is favorably regarded by only about a third of Americans. To this crowd, in this place, he is a rock star.

He hardly appears in public (except at fundraisers), he doesn't write much (except on margins of newspapers), rarely appears on TV and he has NEVER given a press conference.

So why the star status?

7. Dick might have saved the GOPer out here

Word is, the repug running for congress in one of our districts would be almost totally broke (despite receiving $400k from the Club for Growth to buy the primary) if not for $75k raised at a Darth Cheney fund raiser. He's still down in CoH but now he'll be able to smear "conservative values" in our face down the stretch where before, he probably would not have been able to. The point is, don't underestimate how important he is to them.

Unless you're talking about musicians. Call pols anything else you like (and numerous terms come to mind for Darth Cheney!) but I'm so sick of "rock star."
