Serial Killer's Paradise (Iraq)

SERIAL KILLER'S PARADISE

Posted by Tom Aspell , NBC News Correspondent (05:26 pm ET, 08/ 6/06)

Iraq has to be a serial killer's paradise. Scores of dead bodies turn up on dumping grounds outside the country's main cities every morning. Iraqi police reports speak of corpses discovered bound, often showing signs of torture, and shot in the head. And yet nobody is ever arrested and charged with the killings. The overload of bodies prompted Baghdad's main morgue to announce this week that due to lack of storage space they would from now on keep corpses for only two weeks before burying them in mass graves.

The murders, along with the daily attacks against U.S. soldiers and Iraqi security forces, have led military commanders here and in the United States to speak of the country's descent towards civil war. But many Iraqis say their country is already in one.

Sectarian violence, he said, is being blamed on coalition forces for sponsoring an incompetent central government which has allowed Shia Muslims to dominate the Iraqi police. There have been numerous kidnappings and murders of Sunni Muslims carried out by armed men wearing police uniforms.

Snip...

Herein lies the problem: How can Iraqi forces and their U.S. allies disarm the militias which are seen by many here to be the only guarantee of security?

The World is Better off without Saddam

Somehow, this doesn't really sound much better to me. But then again I am a treasonous, 'murica-loathing, liberal, shrill blogger, motivated only by hatred:

But what about the freshly painted schools?

3. That Retort... Sure Rings Hollow Nowadays....
Don't it?

"But they're better off without Saddam"... My arse they are. Barely the handful he killed are better off, the rest have to suffer fresh piles of dead bodies--often friends and relatives on the streets every day. Often enough, they daren't even go out to retrieve the bodies for fear of either retribution or booby traps.

Between scorching high temperatures and scarce electricity to run the air conditioners and the constant fear of being killed and mourning the dead and now year after year of the same with not only no improvement... but a worsening of the situation, all I can say is... if it was me, I probably would have lost my mind long before now.

Anyway, I hope every Republican that ever relied on that argument--that at least Saddam is gone, chokes on that name every time they say it. It would be nice to have a well made comparison, like a flash animation... before, after... life under Saddam, good and bad, life under U.S. Occupation, good(?) and bad. Note the (?) after the good? That's because I wonder if there can actually be found any redeeming factors; I mean, freshly painted schools can only get you so far. Surely there's been other good things? Right? Something? MREs maybe? Yum? Help me out here, I've missed reading about the good things.
