Now your laptop has to go in the belly. And we all know we are not allowed to lock our luggage. Buh-bye laptop with that critical Powerpoint .... or the video porn for your evening entertainment at the hotel.

No electronic keys. How many of you push that button that makes your headlights flash and your doors unlock? Buh-bye Bimmer. All a bad guy's gotta do is make an impression of the key and match it to some ID left in your luggage and his buddy's in while you're in the Bahamas ... burning cuz of no sunblock.

No cell phones.

Ladies ... after that long flight, you get to leave the plane looking like a dishrag. No blush. No foundation. No lipstick. No cosmetics of any kind.

Think about the absolutely draconian lockdown we're now facing.

Shhhhhh .... I'll tell you how.

The following was personally demonstrated by a friend of mine who works in customs. While chatting with him about suitcase locks (immediately after 9/11) he said "We don't worry about locks when we do inspections - we just use our universal suitcase opener". After asking for a demo he pulled a ballpoint pen out of his pocket, stabbed it pointfirst through the teeth of the zipper, and pulled the zipper apart. He then rummaged through my suitcase, grabbed the zipper tags, zipped them all the way to one end and then back to the other and voila! my suitcase was once again zipped (and still locked).

My flying used to be at least 1-2 times monthly and sometimes more. After 911, I've tried to get it down to no more often than 1x yearly--not from fear, but unpleasantness. The airlines are going to go under.

If you have no alternative to contacts... I think if you have a small bottle with a prescription label of rewetting drops, they'd have to let you take them on. It can be extremely detrimental to some wearers who are prone to corneal abrasions and dry eye, not to "re-wet" on a dry long distance plane flight. And, not everyone CAN wear glasses (I know this first-hand)

OK, I just went on an international trip to India and back with a stop in Frankfurt. The flights to the US have their own security checkpoints with American TSA officers. They didn't catch my nail clippers (which had a knife but I forgot about it) but they confiscated my small travel-sized can of shaving cream.

Oh and and on a trip to Chicago, I found out that my suitcase took a separate flight to Chicago! I still got it, but it went in a different plane by accident! This was American Airlines btw.

Driving on our interstate highways for extremely long distances is starting to look more appealing, even with the increase in gas prices and the wear on my car.

Last time I flew (and it's been a while, I hate doing it because I'm marked SSSS with TSA for some unknown reason) I had to pay for my beverages.

Why does this seem like a way to maximize air travel profits? Everyone who flies now has to shell out $5 for a bottle of water that cost the company a quarter?

As frustrating as Amtrak has been in the last few years, it's better than this cattle car treatment.

49. I heard on the 6 o'clock news that electronics are still allowed

on U.S. flights - it's the British that have banned all carry ons. It will be interesting to see what happens to laptops. The business flyers aren't going to like having to put them in cargo - what with all the problems with identity theft and stolen laptops this is going to be a problem.

We were talking about this at work today and wondering if we'll have to start sending our laptops by Fed Ex when we're traveling. At least then it would be in a box and there would be a tracking record.
