Bush now wants full authority over National Guard ( WP)
I realize this is yesterdays news but I just saw it today, for those like me who may have missed it. Seems Bush now wants a full police state in this country.
The nations governors, protesting what they call an unprecedented shift in authority from the states to the federal government. More from washington post here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/13/AR2006081300606.html

So this committee the governors are asking for, will that also be of Republican majority? Why do I just feel that even our governors have no more say? The system is in free fall.

8. Each state should start its own "Guard" militia...
And move the duties and resources previously assigned to National Guard units funded by the state over to the militia instead. And then encourage state residents to join the militia instead of the National Guard. One of the selling points is that they'd have a GUARANTEE of not being sent over to Iraq but only be used for what previously was National Guard duties in their own states (and neighboring states if neighboring states are in need of help in a national disaster).

By having a state militia put in place like that, it also puts in place a force that could be used if ever things get so bad at the federal level that we have to do secessions in states like California, etc. and then we'd have our own military force then with no question of who "owns" them.

And once setting up the miliita, it's federal reps in congress would vote to cut back that state's contributions to National Guard services where possible.

Bush has been rejected by the governors, but you better bet you ass, Bush is trying to come up with another way to get this done. Actually, the way he is running things he would just take it anyway. We need to do something. This bastard has been held accoutable for NOTHING! Impeach now!

12. This is a *good* thing
The only time any of his crap every gets stopped (or comes anywhere near) is when he pushes other elected officials' envelopes too hard. I hope he makes those governors *good* and mad--perhaps they'll rise up on their hind legs.
