Three *very interesting* TV events coming up
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 07:43 AM by underpants
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on these. I am going to invoke the seldom used power of repeated KICKing to keep this where people can see it. Sorry in advance. This first looks REALLY interesting.

Special! Anthony Bourdain in Beirut- this looks very interesting. It is on the same time as the Spike Lee HBO documentary (below) but that will surely be repeated a lot on HBO.
Anthony Bourdain has a pretty cool food/travel show called "No Reservations" which covers the food and people of a certain area with his rather dark and twisted (I like it) observations and humor sprinkled on top. Apparently he was in Beirut when the recent events started.
VIDEO (00:30) here-look for the little :tv: to the right of TUNE IN > near the top

In July 2006, Anthony Bourdain and his crew traveled to Lebanon to film an episode of No Reservations. They discovered a beautiful country filled with proud, generous people and delicious food. However, within 24 hours of arrival they suddenly found themselves stuck in the middle of an intense, uncertain, and violent conflict. From their initial glimpse, to the destruction that followed, Anthony Bourdain in Beirut is the story of what Anthony and his crew saw and experienced during their nine days in the country.

Watch Anthony Bourdain in Beirut on Monday, Aug. 21, at 10 p.m. ET/PT

"When the Levees Broke :A requiem in four acts"
Spike Lee directed
HBO starting this Monday the 21st at 9 PM
http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/whentheleveesbroke/index.html
As the world watched in horror, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005. Like many who watched the unfolding drama on television news, director Spike Lee was shocked not only by the scale of the disaster, but by the slow, inept and disorganized response of the emergency and recovery effort. Lee was moved to document this modern American tragedy, a morality play witnessed by people all around the world. The result is WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE: A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS. The film is structured in four acts, each dealing with a different aspect of the events that preceded and followed Katrina's catastrophic passage through New Orleans. Acts I and II premiere Monday, August 21 at 9pm (ET/PT), followed by Acts III and IV on Tuesday, August 22 at 9pm. All four acts will be seen Tuesday, Aug. 29 (8:00 p.m.-midnight), the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Read more.

"The Path to 9/11"
Sunday, September 10 @ 8/7c
Monday, September 11 @ 8/7c
http://abc.go.com/specials/pathto911.html
This goes from the 1993 bombing to 9/11.
From what I have seen it appears that the Clinton years will dominate-"We are responsible!!!" is clearly heard in one ad I have seen-with the story of the near misses on OBL, the CIA and DoD not pulling the trigger on several of these is hinted at. This is understandable since the Clinton people had some recollection of actually doing something on this matter while the Bush 8 months is nearly vacant of ANY detail of doings in the actual 9/11 report.

This interview with the writer in which it is pretty clear that much of the blame to him is at Clinton's feet.

2. I just saw the ad last night
I saw one of his shows-he went on a seal hunt and the family asked him to eat with them. Very interesting.

3. The only cooking/food show I watch is 'No Reservations'
Anthony Bourdain is both an expert and an everyman. He lives and loves life and doesn't travel around 1st class and visit 'only the finest' and often goes into the back alleys, local joints, and strange locales in search of fantastic (and sometimes questionable) eats. He turns nothing away and snubs no cuisine.

He's all about eating different and new foods. An open mind with a cocky sense of humor and a constant cigarette dangling from his lips.

I really wonder what he'll see and say.

When you go from a commune to a kitchen supply/firearm store to a seal hunt you know you are willing to do just about anything. The seal thing was completely fascinating.

6. Also interesting
Sweden (Especially the Lapland part)
Malaysia (The stinky fruit that he not only tried but savoured.)
Thailand (Delicious friend bat!)
Japan (The restaurant to increase male verility)
China (The backstreet restaurants and his appreceation of truly traditional Chinese cuisine was admirable)
Portugal/Spain: (The experimental restaurant...I forget the genious chef's name.)

all.

If he ever does the Balkans I'll be glued. I would like to see him try

The Quebec one had that one awesome restaurant with the chef who kept feeding hin and feeding him and feeding him. I'm not one for gigantic portions, but the Quebec chefs know how to counter the steriotype that food cooked by a French speaker has to consist of a parsley leaf and 2 half-bites.

Watch some more of it. He's on a quest to try everything and savour it

9. Read his books too.
A Cook's Tour

Kitchen Confidential

The Nasty Bits

My favorite is Kitchen Confidential - it's a fascinating behind the scenes look at working in the restaurant industry.
