Raising Kaine: "Macaca's For Webb" in Norfolk
Happy to report that there were a few more at the Allen-McCain lovefest last night, maybe even outnumbered their supporters! Highlights here:

That was the title of a protest sign a young Indian man held tonight in Norfolk while protesting George Allen.

Allen is a Racist
"Macacas" for Webb

It was a beautiful night tonight in Norfolk. It was relatively cool outside, with a nice breeze. We gathered together around 6:00 to begin what we thought would just be a little protest to Allen's appearance. We didn't dress as Webb Supporters, because this wasn't about Webb. This was about all Virginians, regardless of political offiliation, standing up against a man who thinks it's funny to through around racial slurs like a football.

Actually, he probably throws around slurs MUCH BETTER than he throws a football. But I bet he dodges accusations the same way he dodged defensive linemen...

Poorly.

Anyway, it started out with a handful of Democrats and a handful of members of "Veteran's for Peace." There were also four or five Republicans with "Veterans for Allen" signs. What was really ironic was that not one of those GOP members were veterans. Oh, we had a few between our two groups. Five or so, and many of us with Veterans in our family. It seems Veterans for Allen was kind of redundant at this meeting. As one of our signs said, "Hey George, remember Vietnam? You can ask McCain or Jim Webb about it."

Eventually, as news cameras started to come out, we joined with the VFP to form one big super-group. The Republicans were greatly outnumbered, so they went inside and dragged out more supporters (they were still outnumbered). I recognized of them, my old buddy Teddy. I called out to him, and asked him what he was doing over there. He was only outside for a little while, though. Actually, most of them gave up and went inside after a few minutes. Maybe it was because that there were no veterans at a Veterans for Allen rally. Maybe because people kept honking their horns at the protesters in appreciation. Maybe it was because we were picking people up off the street to join us in protest. Whatever it was, they eventually gave up.

Photographers came by and took pictures of the young man with the "Macacas for Webb" sign. They also photographed an Indian women with a sign that said "Siddarth is not a monkey, he is a human being." They are supposed to be in the Virginian Pilot tomorrow, so keep your eyes open. 6. McCain told a "monkey" joke last night.....
..the crowd groaned, but he was just trying to lighten up this group

We all know that McCain and Allen could very well be fighting for the GOP '08 title?! From what I hear, this was just an "owe" from McCain to Allen?

Who sez it's too early for '08 DU discussions

9. Funny, the local press didn't cover the supporting crowd....
just the Allen photo ops w/McCain, and Thelma Drake w/McCain and Allen, and a headshot of a "veteran" hat pins, and

From what I hear, most of these "allen supporters" were bussed in from the VA hospitals, like he does for every other public event.

I almost feel sorry for McCain, he just has kept going downhill since he wussed out against the Rove Machine in 2000. He loves his party more, obviously

7. Only Thing I EVER Had To Know About Webb
Was that he detested Oliver North (and brought up how inappropriate it was for Ollie to wear his Marine uniform to the Hearings since he dressed in a suit & tie at his job at the White House) and that was BEFORE he joined the Democratic Party.

10. Stories on this in the Virginian-Pilot
Allen gaffe brings ''feeding frenzy''
Reaction to the senator's "Macaca" comments is an example of an even more sophisticated, constantly evolving Internet audience. This election cycle is already being referred to as The Year of YouTube.

Sen. John McCain, left, joined Sen. George Allen on Wednesday in Norfolk at a gathering of local veterans in support of Allen?s re-election bid. Outside, several protesters held signs condemning Allen?s videotaped comments about a campaign worker for his opponent, Jim Webb. VICKI CRONIS/THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT

NORFOLK - Republican Sens. John McCain and George Allen urged full and continued U.S. military presence in Iraq on Wednesday night before a cheering crowd of local veterans.

Before about 100 veterans gathered at the Norfolk Marriott Waterside, McCain lauded Allen as a champion of veterans issues. "He works hard. He believes in what he does. He's dedicated to the issues," McCain said.

"I want him back," McCain added.

Allen, seeking a second term representing Virginia, linked the U.S. presence in Iraq to the global war against terrorism, saying Saddam Hussein abetted suicide bombers in the Middle East.

Allen?s gaffe shows politics to be Internet feeding ground

In Norfolk on Wednesday, Jagdish A. Singh, left, and Gogol Ganguli express opposition toward Sen. George Allen over a remark about an Indian-American member of his rival?s campaign. Singh, a community leader, said, ''I?m so mad!'' VICKI CRONIS/THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT

Sen. George Allen looked into an amateur videographer's camera Friday, smiled to the crowd, and asked the audience to "give a welcome to Macaca, here."

Allen then pointed at an Indian-American staffer working for his opponent in this year's Senate race. Macaca, in some contexts, is an obscure racial slur, and also a genus of monkeys.

Robert Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University, said "The Daily Show" and other outlets have taught Internet users how to manipulate video footage to show a candidate saying one thing, then changing their position down the road.

For Allen, the popularity of the footage on the Internet, circulating via e-mail, forced mainstream media to pay attention, Thompson said.

Traditionally, "t his is the kind of thing that would have never made it " on a national newscast, he said.

13. Ha! . . "how to manipulate video footage "
All you have to do is tape the idiots and let people see what asswipes they are. Not much 'manipulaiton" required there.

they had a special column titled "Sen. George Allen pays dearly for "a cheap laugh and a few votes"

There were 5 letters from all across the area denouncing him.

15. Yep, the gift that keeps on giving....
George Allen is Virginia's Cousin Eddie from National Lampoon's Vacation movies, no offense to Cousin Eddie, who would make a better representative for Virginia than Allen or VA-02's Thelma Drake (R-Delay) !

11. Ha! Give this thing legs, and VA becomes as likely a pickup as...
MO or TN. Politically speaking, Allen sticking his foot so far down his mouth that it tickles his stomach is the best thing that could have happened.

Given some of the things written about him (his sister's book springs immediately to mind), it's kinda sad he wasn't written off as a dangerously sadistic crazy a long time ago.

14. LOL too damned funny
couldn't find any Veterans for the guy who was sipping cocktails in C'ville huh?

"Macaca" will follow Allen around the rest of his life.

I think people should start showing up in Mohawk wigs at Allen events.

That he was just calling him a "Webb Monkey" that perhaps some on Webb's campaign are proud of calling themselves... :P
