The Hypocrisy of Bill Frist |
Bill Frist is staunchly opposed to Affirmative Action. However, he seems to have different feeling about his kids being accepted into college based on factors other than merit. I read a Time Magazine article in which Daniel Golden, a reporter who wrote about legacy admissions for the Wall Street Journal, was interviewed. According to Golden Bill Frist's oldest son Harrison was admitted to Princeton even though he was not a members of his high school's Cum Laude Society which comprises the top 20% of the student body of St. Albans. Golden noted that Harrison Frist did graduate, but without honors and after joining an eating club and being arrested for drunken driving. Now Frist's youngest son has been accepted to Princeton even though he was not in the top 20% of his graduating class at St. Albans. The Frist family has given about $25 million to Princeton University.

2. There's all kinds of affirmative action |
And wealthy white folks from hereditary money have been the beneficiaries of a certain kind of affirmative action for centuries. It's only when some of those other folks (you know, po' folk and folk who ain't quite white) in our society begin demanding the same opportunities as the scions of the overrich that college admissions based on other than merit seem so, you know, unfair. How is a trust fund baby supposed to compete with the young and the hungry when it comes to making one's own way? It's just soooo unfair to the wealthy!
