Another example of republicans "supporting" the troops
Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 10:18 AM by BOSSHOG
An attempt has been made in congress to change the law allowing military widows to receive compensation for both a military retirees survivor benefit plan, which the veteran pays for (and his spouse is entitled to) out of his retirement pay and compensation if the veteran died of service connected causes (which the widow would also be entitled to.)

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/19/washington/19widow.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=login

But house republicans would have none of that. They oppose the "steep price tag" of over 9 billion dollars over ten years. These are the same republicans who give bush that much in two months to play war president in Iraq.

Wave those flags and sports those ribbons "conservatives." Your support is just overwhelming.

10. What a sad,sad mess.
It will take decades to clean up the mess from this admin.. And all the while they will harp that it is the dems fault. I really wish the rapture would come and just take them all to thier great reward. Leave us to build and keep the peace!!!!!!!!

2. The Repubs don't have enough "widows" with money
Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 10:17 AM by Stargazer99
to keep the status quo. Those they send into our "wars" mostly are the lower and middleclass, not their kind.
Personally, I believe some people have too much money and think they deserved to be treated better than the masses.

4. Military Survivors retirement investment plan screwed my mother out of $$$
When she became a widow and the annuity kicked in, the government just deducted the amount of the annuity from her SS check...

So, my mother is no better off than had they not saved the money at all and is WORSE off than had they saved it in a different format.

Another way the government rips off military folks. Some in congress are trying to change this, but they're too busy...

5. I retired four years ago
and I passed on the survivor benefit plan (SBP.) I converted my serviceman's life insurance to veteran's life insurance so my wife will be well taken care of should I depart first; and by doing that my "take home" retirement check is a lot bigger and I invest a part of that into an IRA instead of wasting it on SBP.

SBP is great for a young retiree with a non working spouse and a few kids who is on death's doorstep upon retiring.

My best wishes to your mother.

6. Yanno, BOSS .... I gotta wonder .......
.... where are the various vet organizations on all this? I don't recall hearing from them at all. You'd think they'd be all over this. I'm talking about the big two - VFW and American Legion.

Last Fourth of July ... or maybe two years ago ...... I tromped my ass into their tents on the Mall in DC, right by The Wall, and asked about it. I never got a good answer. Of course, I had my DU-provided Hero/Zero t-shirt on at the time, so maybe they mistook me for a nut instead of a vet.

Thought I cancelled my membership but I still get the magazine in the mail, can barely stand to read it for a couple of seconds with all the crap they put in it.

9. Put another bumper sticker on your car to support the troops Republicans
Just another example of Republicans yelling how they support the troops, then DON'T. Why aren't the Democratic strategists out speaking about how the Republicans REALLY DON'T SUPPORT THE TROOPS!

11. Support the Troops: Dems Walk the Walk
Someone needs to get the truth out there. The GOP gives lip service to the troops to bask in the honor of those who serve. Then comes the backstab.

13. Disgraceful. Despicable.
Republicans don't support the troops. Republicans only support the war. How obvious does it need to be, for people to realize that?

Hello. Republicans hate our troops!
