Lamont, sanguine after victory, attracting new Democratic allies

When Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont announced six months ago he was challenging Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Democratic primary, the political newcomer's support came mostly from grassroots activists, a few state politicians and some liberal Internet bloggers.

But since Aug. 8, when Lamont defeated the 18-year incumbent by about 10,000 votes, Lamont has discovered he has a lot of new friends -- especially those within the Democratic establishment who originally backed Lieberman.

Lamont's phone has been ringing off the hook. Politicians are calling, wanting to campaign for the man who wrested the party nomination from a one-time vice presidential candidate by harnessing anger against the war in Iraq.

"We're going forward united. We're clear on the war, we're clear on health care, we're clear on how we're doing business in Washington, D.C. with the lobbyists and the deficit," said Lamont, who plans to stick with the same message during the general election. "We gotta be clear and bold on where we stand. I'm happy to be talking to these folks."

When Lieberman came out on the senate floor on behalf of the Republicans in the senate and attacked Kerry's bill, his poll numbers started their big dive.

They are mad that Kerry forced the vote THEN when they would have preferred to have the debate AFTER the primaries for Joe's sake.

Joe made the decision then that cost him the election - he sided and SPOKE FOR the GOPs. The media played that clip over and over again in their effort to undermine Kerry and his plan, but look who it ended up hurting more.

"I think it's a very different situation than Sen. Lieberman, who challenged those that challenged the stay-the-course strategy," Lamont said. "He's the one who said you're undermining the credibility of the president -- very different set of circumstances."

I like how Lamont is differentiating lieberman from the Senators who support him.

"Swan, who predicts Lamont will bring around enough voters with his message of change to win the general election, questions how Lieberman can paint himself as the alternative candidate.

"I guess what I think about that is, status quo, status Joe," Swan said.

"You know, how does he run as an agent for change? How does he, after being there 18 years and being as entrenched as anybody is, credibly put forward that he's an agent for change?"
