Hagel Statement on Vote Against Using Taxpayer Funds to Destroy Human Embryos

Tuesday, July 18, 2006

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) released the following statement today regarding his vote against allowing federal funding to be used for expanded stem cell research:

“Whether to federally fund research on embryonic stem cells is a very complex issue with significant long term consequences. Moral, religious, ethical, scientific and health considerations all come together on the embryonic stem cell research question.

“I do not support using taxpayer dollars for the destruction of human embryos. That is the reason I voted against legislation today to expand federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. I support the promising research being done on adult stem cells and voted to support the harvesting of stem cell lines without destroying human embryos. In 2001, I supported the decision President Bush made to allow federally funded stem cell research to proceed only under strict guidelines which will not result in the destruction of any additional human embryos.

“I will support President Bush’s veto of this legislation,” Hagel said.

1. He's like McCain, only more willing to question the Iraq war.

2. Chuck Hagel certainly is not Bush.
First, Bush isn't a conservative; Hagel is.

Second, Hagel isn't a narrow-minded simpleton who can think only in absolutes; Bush and many of his administration are.

I disagree with the vast majority of his other positions, but Hagel deserves a bit of credit for vocalizing his opposition to the war loudly and often.

4. Hagel gets very little credit for lip service on the war!
I've been listening to Hagel's criticism of the war without committing to a position or action for since the 2004. He simply deals in lip service, especially as some one in a position to do something as a member of the majority party.

Criticize Rumsfeld, then say that's the president's decision when asked if he should be replace. Two years of Democratic initiatives calling for a change in course and now withdrawal. Hagel has never spoken out in support of any of these. Investigate the Iraq contracts, vote: certainly not.

The ounce of credit he deserves is people hear the criticisms, the bad is when he acts opposite people assume he must be right! He's a great guy! That was a major problem leading in 2004. He a right wing conservative rhetoric pusher. Rhetoric is responsible for 3,000 deaths each month in Iraq.

3. Other than brains and ability to communicate coherently........
the major difference between Bush and Hagel is that one is a chickenhawk and one served and saw combat. I think anyone, regardless of their political stripes, is much more likely to be cautious or thoughtful about war if they have been in one themselves.
