George W. Bush, reader
A week ago, we discussed whether the president actually read Camus' "The Stranger," and discussed the origins of existentialism. It turns out, however, there's a little more to Bush's new-found appreciation of the printed word.

Maybe it was the influence of his wife, Laura, a former librarian, or his mother, Barbara, a longtime promoter of literacy. Or perhaps he was just eager to dispel his image as an intellectual lightweight. But President Bush now wants it known that he is a man of letters.

In fact, Bush has entered a book-reading competition with Karl Rove, his political adviser. White House aides say the president has read 60 books so far this year (while the brainy Rove, to Bush's competitive delight, has racked up only 50).

U.S. News & World Report's Kenneth T. Walsh published a portion of the president's 60-book list, while C-SPAN posted an even more complete list.

I try to avoid categorical statements about people I've never met and don't know personally, but I feel comfortable saying there is absolutely no way on earth the president read all of these books. None.

I completely agree with the author and like everybody else, I gotta ask "Where's 'My Pet Goat' on the list"?

3. I dare the DC press corps ...
... ask Chimpy about the content of a couple of those books. Don't ask Tony; ask Chimpy, at his next live press conference.

It'll be the price-scanner moment of the year.

4. Yes .. exactly ..
though if he tried to answer, we would be subjected to that stammering .. duh duh .. goofy drool face, dancing monkey act .. followed by his garbled utterances of "terra terra" and "9/11" .. or a farting noise.

5. I always thought he had to marry a librarian...
...so she could teach him to read. He's gotta read the teleprompter, after all - or have they replaced that completely with the microphone-in-the-ear and the mysterious bulge in the jacket?

I'm sure those 60 books he has "read" were all picture books for first graders. I didn't say Pickles taught him to read well. ;)

8. It says that it's his "summer reading list"
not that he actually read them. Hmmm. Teachers used to give out summer reading lists to their students to read also, that doesn't mean the students really did it.
