WTF ?-Democrats for McCain
Democrats for McCain

It was only a matter of time before some Democrats began jumping ship to join the all-but-announced McCain for President campaign.

The first casualty is Nicco Mele, the former webmaster of the groundbreaking Dean for America campaign. According to the Hotline, Mele, whose firm Echo Ditto represents over twenty Democratic and progressive causes, has agreed to become one of McCain's key online strategists.

The move has caused a fury in the blogosphere since it was reported last night. Mele recently posted this blog in his defense:

A lot of people are asking me about John McCain. When I worked for Common Cause, I worked on the McCain-Feingold bill and worked closely with Sen. John McCain's office. After Sen. McCain lost the Republican primary in 2000, I traveled with him as part of a group of campaign finance reform staffers as we criss-crossed the country working to secure support for the McCain-Feingold bill. I have long admired Sen. McCain's work on campaign finance reform and his independent streak. If Sen. McCain runs for president, he's got my support.

But Mele and other Democrats tempted to follow his lead should realize that the straight-talking McCain of 2000 is not the Bush-coddling McCain who wants to win in 2008.

1. A lot of people admire McCain due to America's politicis
American politics is so much about the person's "character" and "charisma" and "experience" and "values." And you have to admit, he comes off as a nice guy.

2. No, he comes off as an ass-kisser -
will do and say anything for his own benefit. Nice guy? Please.

19. I'm talking about personal talking-point characteristics
Not his politics. Political stances don't matter much in American politics, at least not much of it. It's all about the politician's character and family values -- don't you know?

21. mccain has little character & no family values
you said: "it's all about the politician's character and family values"

well if that's the case mccain won't get anywhere

let's think back a few years when bush did push polling:

"john mccain has a black baby" (implying his wife cheated on him or he cheated on his wife. the truth? they adopted a little girl from Bangladesh)

"john mccain's wife is a drug addict"; "john mccain went crazy being a pow"

did he ever stand up to that crap? did he ever kick bush in the ass over that? he lost the south carolina primary and was then seen giving bush a nice big hug over the whole thing.

family values? hardly. character? none. integrity? lacking.
he can't stand up for himself or his family--why the hell would anyone think he would stand up for the rest of us?

5. He is not nice. He is just as bad as bush. Doesn't
give a rats behind about you or me. Don't be fooled. last night Matthews blew apart all his lies. He is as dishonest as the rest of the neocons.

6. No Dems I know admire McCain because they see right
through him. He's a tool for the repugs, is pro-war, and his character and integrity have been suspect ever since he let the blivet slime his family.

Not seeing it. I see a flip-flopping, ass-kissing, finger-in-the-wind, two-faced GOP hot head.

7. There was a time.....
....when I might have considered a vote for McCain. Thank god that never happened! Although he may be "republican light", he is still a republican, and he has shown he will always follow their agenda. Don't be fooled by his occasional reasonable thought. He does make reasonable comments from time to time, but all in all, he is still republican, and I could never, ever, vote for a republican. Ever!

8. I feel the same way now. Mostly due to Malloy pointing out what
kind of person is it who would have * campaign attack his family and then turn around and campaign for him. Straight Talk express was apparently some kind of gimmick.

I'm never voting for republicicon after this administration. Was previously an independent.

groups are equally ridiculous.

12. Welcome to the MSM "Campaign for McCain"
The all-around "wonderfulness" of straight-shootin' John McCain will be touted ad nauseum for the next two years and 2 months by pretty much EVERYBODY working for CNN, MSNBC, AP, CBS, ABC, NBC, the Times, Post, etc. Get used to it. Barring the proverbial "live boy/dead woman" type scandal, he can do no wrong in their starry eyed view. Ever. That is cast in stone. (kind of the flip side of the effective 2000 Campaign against Gore)

17. Nicco Mele a Deaniac for McCain
Nicco Mele
by kos

I used to consider Nicco Mele, a top former Dean webhand, a friend until his rabid desire for regulating the blogosphere led me to write him off.

He is now joining the McCain team.

He claims it has nothing to do with his firm EchoDitto, where he is CEO, but that's bullshit. The expertise and intelligence he is gathering from the following clients can and will end up as part of the McCain arsenal in 2008. These organizations should consider finding new technical consultants.

As to Nicco's love for McCain, seemingly based on McCain's efforts toward campaign finance reform, Matt Yglesias says it all:

A handful of additional wars and steep cuts in vital retirement security programs would be a small price to pay for minor alterations to the campaign finance system!

because of this. It sound a lot like I am going to be making $$$$, and I don't mind if McCain uses me as a example of Democrats who support Republicans.

he is suggesting that Feingold is going to be his running mate. Now that would be one for the books a McCain/Feingold ticket. But we know that is not happening.

22. I don't trust Unity 08. Nicco Mele is one of the founders.
Yes, I know there are some from many campaigns, but I have doubts about them.

They have some of Carter's folks, who are also supporting Republicans.

Look over their founders.

They want to run a Republican and Democrat on the same ticket. I don't like that right now.

There are a few Republicans I like, but I don't want Democrats running with them right now.

They have Howard Dean riding in a little train car with Cheney, and the scream also. Suspicious.

I have long admired Sen. McCain's work on campaign finance reform and his independent streak.

Since when does a rubber stamp qualifies as an "independent streak?"

To a cross party ticket in 08. It is not going over very well, and that is good.
