Who Will the Republicans Nominate in 2008?
Rather than beat up on each other, let's look at the other side.

I know 2006 is the main focus, right now. But this is an interesting discussion nevertheless. If you don't want to talk about 2008 yet, just don't bother participating in this thread.

So who will the Republicans nominate in 2008?

I see three main possibilities: John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, and Mitt Romney. Mike Huckabee (Ark.) is a dark-horse possibility.

My guess is that George Allen is fast losing favor. It isn't just Macaca-gate; it's that on top of everything else. You can tell his stock is falling based on the responses of Republican staffers in Congress, amongst whom, according to National Journal's poll, Allen's support has rapidly fallen. Republicans do tend to follow an establishment choice, so the Republican insider's poll is always a useful barometer (unlike the Democrats, who have historically been much more unpredictable). Chuck Todd has commented on this, as well. Chatter for Allen is really tailing off, especially as Bush becomes more unpopular. Even if Allen survives this year, chances are it'll be a close victory, much closer than a potential presidential candidate should be hoping for.

That leaves the other three. Sam Brownback is a possible, even probable, insurgent whose effect may be like Pat Buchanan's. Ultimately, however, he isn't going to get the nod.

Between McCain, Giuliani, and Romney, it's difficult to say who will be the nominee. McCain is distrusted and unacceptable to roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of the Republican base. Giuliani has so far enjoyed high poll numbers but it's not clear whether he's actually going to run or not and his liberal social positions will make it difficult for him to win the nomination. Romney is Mormon, a big no-no among evangelicals.

My guess is that in the end, it'll be Romney. So far, he's been getting a surprisingly good response from conservative Christians and he's seen as "electable."

2. I don't think any of them can win
McCain is a bush (ass) kisser, a flip-flopper big time. Giuliani is a moron, his lack of action on 911 and subsequent actions make him a minus. Romney is a mormon, and I don't think the Christian Co. will stick by him. McCain is the most probable choice for the repugs. Either Kerry, Gore, or Russ can beat them. Us Dems need to dig the dirt on all of them, like they do to us. I think the future looks good.

3. Following their surprise gains in both the House and Senate
in the (fixed) 2006 elections, they will turn to Jeb Bush to head their successful run for the White House in 2008.

Frist and Brownback are too freak'n WEIRD!!

So that leaves your darkhorse candidate, Huckabee.

There you have it. The GOP's candidate. http://eliteleague.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/lol!.gif

BTW, McCain - if he runs will have to answer a lot of questions about his close ties to white supremacist Richard Quinn and his recent funding of Quinn's election in SC. He'll also catch flack for his huge support of George Wallace, Jr.

Yep. Huckabee.

Edit to add: BENHURST: AMERICA DOESN'T WANT ANY MORE BUSH'S !!!!

7. Hagel upsets McCain in Iowa, wins the next week in NH also.
McCain drops out.

Webb whips Allen in Virginia this November, ending pretext for Allen's presidential run.

Agree with you that Brownback has insurgent potential.

8. Definitely NOT Jeb
A recent national poll clearly shows W's low approval rate is negatively affecting both his father's and brother's approval as well. Jebbie baby will have to wait until 2012 or 2016.

The GOP nominee will be McCain, but he will not enjoy unanimous favor among Repubs.

10. Frist or Jeb
Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 05:53 PM by JunkYardDogg
Grand Masta MC Dupe-ya Bloodbath Bush has already annointed his brudda, Jeb-ya
These bastards have far too much invested in creating a shadow government, writing a shadow constitution to govern their shadow government, passing HAVA to legislate, codify, and mandate every election manipulating tactic they have used since 2000, shoving their E-voting machines down America's throat, their extensive program of Demographic Voter cleansing, their creation of the concept of the omnipotent unrestrained power of the excecutive, and their Anthrax assassination attempts on the political opposition leaders, their packing of the Supreme Court to enforce their totalitarian agenda, their financial and legislative support of religious extremists carrying out their seditious war on secular America, and their Supreme Court establishing the precedent of the elimination of election recounts, via Gore v. Bush 2000, to even remotely make the possibility of any type of 2008 Presidential victory happening.
They have laid the foundation for the absolute totalitarian control of
America.
They control the American voting process and they have carried out assassination attempts against Political Opposition leaders, and they
will not hesitate to repeats these acts.
They will NEVER let McCain or Hagel run for President. They will only permit somebody who will protect and promote what they have put into place. And that person will win.

11. The Christian right will never vote for a Mormon
Don't forget that the Republic base is rightwing evangelical Christians, who are the single most viciously bigoted group of people on the planet. They hate everyone who isn't with them on their jihad. They will not tolerate a Mormon.

12. Absolutely correct.
The Christian Evangelical right consider Mormonism to be a cult, pure and simple. They would never vote for him and I doubt that they would vote for Guliani given his less than stellar moral performance in regards to his mistress and wife, plus being pro-choice and pro-gay rights. I had no idea that McCain is as old as he is. I think that would be an issue, but maybe they would make Jeb the VP candidate.

14. John McCain - The national media LOVES him
Most Americans don't look at a candidates policies, they just get an image about him and judge based on that. The MSM is painting McCain as an independent, moderate maverick. That is the image that America sees.

Unless he develops health problems and his age causes problems for him.
