I've tried for 5 days to get to the Library when it's open. (Funding Cuts)
backstory - book on hold since the 19th, working night shift (11-7) and trying to pick it up before they give it to someone else. :(

Funding cuts have reduced the hours the library can be open.

Monday - Wednesday 10 AM - 8 PM
Thursday 1 PM - 8 PM
Friday & Saturday 10 AM - 5 PM
Sunday 1 PM - 5 PM

I sleep from about 10 to 7 (or try-to-sleep).

Damn it! I'd pay good money to be able to get to the Library when I need to!

I have a chance to do just that in November...

Library and Public Safety Levies, Washington County, Oregon.
http://www.wilinet.wccls.lib.or.us/news/default.cfm?pac=h&pg=levy_letter

Measure 34-126 would maintain current services at 12 local libraries throughout Washington County, including libraries in Banks, Beaverton, Cedar Mill, Cornelius, Forest Grove, Garden Home, Hillsboro, North Plains, Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin and West Slope. Levy passage would avoid likely additional reductions in hours, book purchases and programs and would restore open hours at some libraries. The levy would also provide annual summer reading programs serving some 17,000 children each year as well as provide literacy programs for preschoolers to increase reading readiness. The library levy proposes a fixed rate of 17 cents per $1,000 assessed value for four years, or an increase of roughly $33 in 2007-2008 for a home with an average assessed value (not market value) of $192,000.

What about your local Library? Is it worth $35 dollars to you? Do you have a chance this November to vote for your libraries?

1. while the hours that the library is open suck
is there any days that you do not work? maybe you can go one of those days to pick up the book.

the library hours near me (astoria queens) are as as follows
mon 10-8, tues 1-6, wed 10-6, thurs 1-8, fri 10-6 closed sat and sundays.

NYC for a long time has short changed the public libraries and whenever there are budget cuts, the libraries get hit first.

so i can relate to what you are going thru.

4. Don't get me started!
I'm reading Twilight of the American Culture, and Dark Ages America is waiting on the shelf. The 'dumbing down of America' figures big in his theory.

3. Damn Readers!

Watch the TV like the rest of America. It's totally fine and it won't hurt you at all. In fact, all the knowledgating you do by reading ruins your eyesight. TV saves your eyes by recreating everything from books in a bigger, more easily digestible size.

TV: the chewable, cherry-flavored book!

5. Libraries are on the endangered list, too!
Back in my dirtyhippiecommiepinkobum days, I never thought I'd see the day when the gobmint was actually trying to get rid of public schools, libraries, national parks, etc.

But, here we are.

When, do you suppose, the general populace is going to notice??

6. I agree that it sucks that the libraries are cutting back on hours.
Especially in Oregon which has the highest library usage in the country. Rains alot.

You know, they will mail the book to you. It's really not that expensive.

And even DH always votes 'yes' to increased funding. I just point out how much more it will cost if I actually bought every book I read.

7. The library system in Orlando delivers books for free to your home.
And it is open 7 days a week.

And, I love working here.

8. I wanna be a Librarian when I grow up!
Seriously. The last kid will be out of the house in about 3-4 years. I hope I can find a way to get back to school. :crossed fingers smilie:

and if Society collapses, and books are banned, I will become like the Monks of the Order of Leibowitz and laboriously copy the texts that have survived the Dark Times.
