Lieberman to Consider Iraq Pullout Plan

Lieberman Says He Will Take a Look at Shays Proposal for Troop Withdrawal From Iraq
By SUSAN HAIGH
The Associated Press

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sen. Joe Lieberman, the three-term Democrat whose independent campaign for re-election is being seen as a referendum on the Iraq war, said Friday he would consider taking a look at a fellow lawmaker's proposal for a timeline for troop withdrawals.

The proposal was floated by Republican Rep. Chris Shays, another Connecticut politician facing a tough re-election battle with an anti-war candidate. Shays has long been a supporter of the war and previously opposed withdrawal timetables.

"It seems to me that Chris is saying, maybe we ought to set some goals for when we want to get out, and I'd like to see what he has in mind before I comment on it," Lieberman said while campaigning in New Haven.

"As I've said to you over and over again, the sooner we get out of Iraq, the better it's going to be for the Iraqis and us, but if we leave too soon for reasons of American politics, it's going to be disaster for the Iraqis and for us," he said.

32. Shays bastardizes Kerry withdrawal plan that JOE condemned on Senate floor
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 11:09 AM by blm
last June, and NOW he says he's going to consider withdrawal because a REPUBLICAN is latching onto it? Now THAT is partisanship - Joe being very loyal to his REAL team.

33. Even after he lost the primary
he was blathering on about how setting a "date certain" as Lamont advocated was sending the wrong message to the terraists and they would just lie in wait until our troops were gone before really striking out at the new Iraqi govt.

It doesn't even qualify as political double-speak... its just plain stupid contradictory crap.

I just found this on of all places Kyl's re-election site.

Senator McCain said that supporting the Reed-Levin Amendment was equivalent to supporting a premature withdrawal of our troops. In his statement on the Senate Floor, McCain said that support for the amendment was ?a significant step on the road to disaster? because it called for ?a withdrawal of American troops tied to arbitrary timetables, rather than conditions in-country.? He continued, ?Draw-downs must be based on conditions in-country, not an arbitrary deadline rooted in our domestic politics.? . Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman confirmed, ?The Levin amendment directs that a withdrawal of American troops from Iraq begin by the end of this year, 2006, without regard to the conditions on the ground.? . http://www.jonkyl.com/press/062706.aspx

He is so two-faced.

25. Maybe he didn't realize that this could make him lose
the Bush lovers. I seriously doubt this would make him gain those lost to Lamont over Iraq. This is a flip flop from ONE month ago. Also, Kerry/Feingold plan is very well constructed to deal with the ongoing problems in the area. Does Shays actually even have a plan - it had sounded more like he would back one.

Republicans in Blue States Rethink Iraq

Some conservative defenders of the war, facing opinion polls and antiwar challengers in November, are now talking withdrawal.

By Johanna Neuman, Times Staff Writer
August 26, 2006

WASHINGTON — Since U.S. forces attacked in 2003, Rep. Christopher Shays, a moderate Republican from Connecticut's liberal 4th District, has been a stalwart defender of the Iraq war.

Snip...

Iraq's political leaders need a deadline to "do things in a timely basis." Otherwise, he said, "they will take years. And there aren't years available."

Shays becomes the third Republican lawmaker from a Democratic or swing state to distance himself from the Bush administration's war policy. With public support for the war sagging and many Democratic candidates vocally opposing it, Republicans in tight races in blue states are under particular pressure.

Democrats have felt the heat as well. Earlier this month Sen. Joe Lieberman, a supporter of the war, was defeated in Connecticut's Democratic primary by political novice and antiwar candidate Ned Lamont.

Lieberman is now running as an independent, but Republicans throughout the country — eyeing opinion polls showing that more than 60% of the public disapproves of President Bush's handling of the war — took note.

He is simply parroting Senator Kerry's words:

“Setting a deadline to redeploy U.S. troops from Iraq is necessary for success in Iraq and victory in the war on terror. Iraqi politicians have proven they only respond to deadlines - a deadline to transfer authority, deadlines to hold two elections and a referendum, and a deadline to form a government. Now we need another deadline to get Iraq up on its own two feet. Our troops have done their part, it’s time for the politicians in Iraq and the United States to do their job.
