Rumsfeld on Iraq War Critics: ‘Quitters’ Who ‘Blame America First’ And ‘Cannot Stomach A Tough Fight’

rumsfeldvfw2.jpg Yesterday, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld gave a speech in Reno, Nevada to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rumsfeld could have taken the opportunity to address the critical challenges of the war in Iraq: the security situation in Baghdad, mounting U.S. military and Iraqi civilian casualties and out-of-control costs.

Instead, he took the opportunity to repeatedly attack — implicitly and explicitly — anyone who dares to criticize the administration’s “stay the course” policy. Some excerpts:

– “And while some argue for tossing in the towel, the enemy is waiting and hoping for us to do just that. Early on, I learned from my dad — a veteran of World War II — that if you start quitting things, pretty soon you’ve become a quitter.”

– “Surely by now we have learned the lesson that when our country gives our troops a mission, they should have the resources and support to finish the job. And surely, we have learned the dangers of giving the enemy the false impression that Americans cannot stomach a tough fight.”

3. Hey, Rummy:
Who, exactly, is "the enemy" you are fighting? Would that be the 93% of Iraqis who want your fat ass gone TODAY? If so, I suggest you start talking nukes, because it'll take too many forking bullets to kill 23 million people.

"A few dead enders".......famous Rumsfuck words....now 23 million pissed off Iraqis who are now 'the enemy'

What a useless carbon based life form this dangerous senile old bastard is.

4. You should have thought of that in advance
Ok, Rummy, as far as giving the troops the resources to finish the job, you haven't. Handing over lucrative no-bid contracts to Halliburton to rip off American tax-payers is not provided proper resources, nor is dangerously underestimating troop strength, not enough to succeed, won't do it either. The worst thing, though, is that this war was designed to be endless.

One other thing I'd like to point out is that reducing all areas of veteran health care, while giving the wealthy yet more tax breaks, is insane. The troops don't have a clearly defined mission, not in this kind of invasion and occupation. We can stomach a tough fight, we just can't stomach an impossible one. WE support the troops, it's you and your cronies who are sending them into this illegal an immoral invasion, just to further line your pockets.

5. "they should have the resources and support to finish the job"
Wasn't that sort of what Gen. Shinseki said? And who was it who insisted on sending the 'minimum' number of troops?

7. ww2 is not iraq.
in fact, korea was not ww2. vietnam was not ww2. we didn't win those. hell, ww1 was not ww2. plenty of americans, right & left, were jailed for pointing out that we didn't need to get involved in that bloody fiasco.

rummy's dad fought in the only american war where there was a clear moral difference between sides. and that is pushing it; stalin was on OUR side, and we dropped 2 nuclear weapons on civilian populations.
