a DU proposal: a thread to link to YOUR best post of the day
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 10:45 PM by welshTerrier2
other sites use a concept that is sometimes referred to as "journal or diary rescues" ... it lets posts that may not have received much recognition get a little more visibility ...

what would you think of a daily thread that would allow any DU'er to post a link to what THEY believe is THEIR best post of the day ... it could either point to an original thread or it could point to a reply they made ...

posters to this thread would be "sort of expected to 'return the favor'" ... the idea would be that in exchange for getting your "post of the day" listed, you would read and perhaps respond to the other posts linked to in the thread ...

just a thought ... perhaps this idea needs some tweaking but i've had many experiences where my "best post" was pretty lonely and some of my junkier ones got all kinds of responses ...

looking for feedback on the general concept and also for details on how this might work ... put on your thinking caps ...

btw, some might say this is the purpose of the "greatest page" but the idea here would not be what others have rated as the greatest but would be what you rate as your best post ...

1. Nah, there are enough

ways for people to endlessly promote themselves here on DU. Look around DU's GD for instance and note how Lounge-like it has become.

I say we start discouraging this pathetic increase of self aggrandizement.

2. that's interesting ...
are you differentiating between GD and GDP or do you think both forums are becoming "Lounge-like"?

are you saying that there are many posts that have nothing to do with politics or issues? you know, things like "has anyone tried the new Ben and Jerry's Global Warming vanilla? ... i keep buying it but it always melts before i get it home ..."

i also wish we had a DU forum just to discuss DU itself ... it would be a place where we could discuss ways to improve DU and make recommendations to the admins about new rules we'd like to see or rules we want to change or whatever ... we used to have the "Ask the Admins" forum that provided at least a little of that ...

anyway, not to worry ... doesn't seem like anyone else is particularly interested in the "my best post of the day" thread ... my goal wouldn't have been self-aggrandizement although perhaps that would have been the result ... my goal was more an opportunity to rescue good posts that didn't receive a popular response ... the "lots of responses" threads are very often not the best ones ...

3. She's right.... GD is a bit different than it used to be these days...
I noticed it a couple of weeks ago, but that's only when it got my attention.

I think once the elections loom more closely, though, that will change. I hope.

4. GD far more than GDP
And frankly it's one of the reasons I DON'T sport my DU bumper sticker. It's so sad to see.

And I certainly didn't mean to imply your purpose was to help folks with self aggrandizement habits but of course they'd exploit it for such purpose. Agreed that ATA forum was a great place to discuss DU issues. Wish there was such a place still, it might help to clean up the clutter in GD.

5. Isn't this what the Greatest Page is for ?
I'm just so glad DU doesn't "vote down" like other sites do. Also, the Journals are a great place to catch up with your favorite DU authors :hi:

6. I like it in concept ........ but ......
.... you hadda know there's be a 'but' :) )

I think what Julie said, above has merit. It is probably inevitable that some would use it for self-agrandizement.

Apart from that, I like the idea. You and I have talked about this issue before - not your specific OP proposal here, but the idea that good threads with real meat tend to die in favor of something controversial or fluffy. GD is, indeed, becoming Lounge-like.

Just the other day, I posted this. The bigger 'national security' crisis that nobody is talking about. Sure, it got 14 noms and stayed on the Greatest page for a while. But the volume of discussion replies - which was why I posted it - was slim. It literally got half the replies as it did noms. Obviously some people thought it worthwhile. Would more time in active, first page GDPol status have gotten it more replies and some meaningful discussion? Who knows.

I'd like to see a superforum, on the same level as GD and GDPol, for **NON** breaking news. Things or events that are no **less** than ..... whatever .... 48 hours old. 72 hours old. That's where that linked post, above, would have gone. The point being, such a forum would be less likely to have 'Tourettes Posts' (and of which I admit to being guilty.) that are knee-jerks to things said by Tweety to his guest du jour.
