In their first joint appearance since a Democratic "unity" event following their primary victories three weeks ago, Ned Lamont and John DeStefano were surrounded Monday by union workers as they picked up endorsements from the Service Employees International Union.
The endorsement by 55,000 union members and retirees was the largest yet for Lamont, who defeated Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman in the Democratic primary and is facing him in a rematch on Nov. 7. The union had endorsed DeStefano in his gubernatorial primary and offered its re-endorsement for the general election.
The union support came on a day when a new Zogby International poll showed DeStefano trailing Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell by 17 percentage points - a far closer margin than the 32-point spread shown recently by the Quinnipiac University poll.
