Leno, Letterman, etc., on AWOL Bush vs Kerry, and on other candidates
Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 10:17 AM by cryofan
Leno:

"The big fight right now between John Kerry and George W. Bush is over their military service. And Bush is on the attack - he's accusing John Kerry of ducking time in the Texas Air National Guard once a month by hiding in the jungles of Vietnam."

"Tuesday night John Edwards won the South Carolina primary. His basic stump speech is that there are really two Americas: one where he tries to hide his Southern accent and one where he emphasizes it!"

"Today Dennis Kucinich vowed to stay in the presidential race. Stay in? How about get in?"

---
Conan O'Brien:

"This week, both John Kerry and Wesley Clark were campaigning with men who saved their lives in Vietnam. Meanwhile, Bush will be campaigning with a man who once took a math test for him."

4. Check this one out - Kerry looks like he thinks too much...
"One critic wrote that the problem with John Kerry 'is he looks like he thinks too much.' Well you won't hear anyone accusing President Bush of that!"

You know you're in trouble when the late night comedians are talking like this.

5. Does anybody think that maybe...
With this stuff and the above stories on Imus and Stern that the zeitgeist is turning, maybe just a little?

6. Yes, because
Leno is a craven opportunist, and the fact the he would make any joke at Lord Farquad's expense suggests that he knows the pres is on the ropes. Note how Leno never explicitly endorsed Schwarzenegger but pimped his show out for appearances by Arnold announcing his candidacy and acceptance/winning etc. Playing his cards "safe" but currying favor nonetheless.

8. Ah, but you left out the Liebermania!
"As I'm sure you know by now, Joe Lieberman has dropped out of the race after finishing 27 points behind Kerry in South Carolina. It wasn't even John Kerry; it was Drew Carey!"

"A number of political analysts now say the nomination is John Kerry's to lose. And today Joe Lieberman told Kerry, 'I can show you how to do that.'"

(both by Leno)

And that top ten list for Edwards was effing hilarious... I'm really sorry I missed that.

9. This AWOL issue has a strong chance of backfiring

I'd like to see bush thrown in the stockade for desertion, but already the signs are there that a cover-up is in the works.

Watch for Kerry to handle this very, very carefully. Rove is the master of detonating dynamite in the details.

Edit: And Leno is the master of kicking people when he thinks they're down.
