Will Flag Flying Campaign Effect Elections?
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 07:55 AM by Don1
There is a new GOP campaign to get websites and blogs to display the flag as a banner on 9/11 and for homes to put the flag out on 9/11. There are several seemingly innocent websites that are showing the same exact text about this campaign, like these two:
http://www.homesteadblogger.com/HSBFrontPorch/25009
http://www.amhersttimes.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2633&Itemid=27

And there are mass emails with that same text going around, like these two:
http://msgboard.snopes.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=002208;p=1
http://forum2.breakthechain.org/viewtopic.php?p=7433&sid=62f649ceadbab12127bd5129b3cf49a6

While flying the flag is neither good nor bad, note the fine print in this message:
"We do this in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms." In other words, this campaign will try to attach purpose to all the flag-waving on 9/11 and that purpose will be to say that the US citizens support the Iraq war.

It will be played out in the news media as public support for the war on terror (and Iraq). And liberals arguing against the logic will be treated like they are offending the 9/11 families. With all the mud-slinging that will go on, do you think Bush's approval rating will rise? Do you think more support will come for the GOP like they plan?

Could someone come up with a rational and nice response to the mass email going around?

1. I would ask, how has the Bush Administration
"preserved" our cherished freedoms? Domestic Spying? Going after the media?
Wanting libraries to provide records of reading habits? The racial harrassment of darker skinned people, whether it is Arabs to Central Americans? Fly the flag upside down to symbolize an emergency.

7. Good points.
It doesn't make sense to me either. I actually commented on the domestic spying on one of these sites:

2. Nothing unusual will affect our elections except the voting machines.

3. No.
No. I can't think of anything nice to say about this.

We fly the flag every day. Nobody gets to tell me that means we support the war in Iraq or the current administration.

8. Right.
You should be able to fly the flag on 9/11 if you want without the GOP trying to make a political statement by taking advantage of people's deaths.

Yes, and welcome to DU.

5. Missouri passed a couple of laws!!!

HB 984 -- DISPLAY OF THE POW/MIA FLAG
This bill encourages all government buildings, businesses, and
Missouri residents to display the POW/MIA flag on Memorial Day,
July 4, September 11, and Veterans Day.

This one actually requires it!

HB 983 -- DISPLAY OF FLAGS
This bill requires the United States and the Missouri state flags
to be flown at half-staff on all government buildings on
September 11 of each year.

It doesn't get any more fascist than that!
Both were passed of course with "overwhelming bipartisan support."

6. I stopped flying flags a long time ago.
If I were to fly one again, it would be upside down.
