Kerry responds to Bush's speech today on the GWOT
Kerry Responds to Bush Speech at Military Officers Association of America

“If President Bush had unleashed the American military to do the job at Tora Bora four years ago and killed Osama bin Laden, he wouldn’t have to quote this barbarian’s words today. Because President Bush lost focus on the killers who attacked us and instead launched a disastrous war in Iraq, today Osama bin Laden and his henchmen still find sanctuary in the no-man’s land between Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they still plot attacks against America. In a feat of incompetence and ideology, this administration has chosen to fight the primary battle in the wrong place in the wrong way.

“President Bush says Osama bin Laden and the terrorists plan to target America’s ‘weak points.’ That’s why it’s even more unacceptable that while the president gives speeches, our borders remain porous and our ports, chemical plants and railways remain insecure. Over here, our weak points remain weak because this administration has had the wrong priorities. And over there, Afghanistan is slipping back into chaos, Pakistan is one coup away from becoming a radical Islamic state with nuclear weapons, Iran is closer to a nuclear arsenal, and Iraq has become a recruitment poster for terror. Only Donald Rumsfeld could call this a plan for victory. A new document may get the Administration through the next news cycle, but it will not win the war on terror. We need to change course, not more of the same.”

Hey, did you hear that Pakistan is no longer going to use their troops to go after bin Laden. Sigh! We should have gotten the bastard at Tora Bora, like Kerry said back in '04.

4. Yeah, he did. They got re-outsourced to the Taliban
That's just the way these things go, you know. The Taliban was the low-bidder to get the job done.

2. Bush also said there has not been a terror attack since 9/11. Anthrax???
I guess he doesn't count attacks perpetrated by the CIA against Democrats as terror attacks.

3. tiptoeing around the truth turns my stomach.
bush didnt want to catch bin laden. he is the bogeyman.
they knew 9/11 was coming and either let it happen or colluded in it.
their goals are to consolidate power and wealth in a fascist corporate upper class and bludgeon the rest of us into submission with oppression and fear mongering.

they have been extremely successful.

6. Of course they do
Their list of boogie-men is growing thin. Bush mentioned Hitler today and Rummy mentioned Chamberlain last week. They have very little left they can run on except "We would have fought on the side of the Allies in WWII."

Bush only knows spin. When it comes to planning and strategy, he's a complete failure.

11. Love it but one suggestion:
The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level heuristic indicates that the average student in the grade level produced by the scale can read the text.

An analysis of JK's statement yields a grade level score of 13.78 (College Freshman)

He's talking way over the heads of half the voters.

Bush speeches score 5 or 6 (which is appropriate for this broad audience.)

Kerry should edit edit edit and frankly, dumb it down while punching it up. He's very hard for Joe Sixpack to follow.

15. But how would that still sound like Kerry?
Kerry Responds to Bush Speech at Military Officers Association of America

Old Kerry: “If President Bush had unleashed the American military to do the job at Tora Bora four years ago and killed Osama bin Laden, he wouldn’t have to quote this barbarian’s words today.

New Kerry: Git 'er done, ya moron. You had the guy cornered, you shoulda punched his lights out.

OK: Because President Bush lost focus on the killers who attacked us and instead launched a disastrous war in Iraq, today Osama bin Laden and his henchmen still find sanctuary in the no-man’s land between Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they still plot attacks against America.

NK: Osama lives to fight another day cuz Bush didn't punch his lights out when he had the chance back then. Then we hauled ass to Iraq and started a war because we felt like it. Bad mistake. Everyone knows you never leave the bad guy with a chance to escape. Any movie fan knows that leaves room for a sequel. (Friday the 13th, with OBL as Jason.)

OK: In a feat of incompetence and ideology, this administration has chosen to fight the primary battle in the wrong place in the wrong way.

NK: The Bush Admin thought they could walk on water. Turns out they could barely get around street puddles. What a bunch of flaming idiots.

I bet my NK scores much dumber on the scale thing. However, it really doesn't sound like Sen. Kerry all that much. How dumb should we go? Ban words with more than two syllables or longer than say 7 or 8 letters? Any hard and fast rules on how to achieve just the right level of dumbness?

16. I agree that Kerry should sound like himself - but CONSIDERING how it
could play another way, and adding that to the mix could be an interesting approach that I wouldn't mind hearing. Not at eighth grade level, but maybe 11-12.

btw - VERY funny post - are you sure you're not a comedy writer? ;)

if an 11th or 12th grader cannot understand that comment, then IMO they don't belong in 11th or 12th grade. My daughter was taking 3rd year French in the 9th grade.

I think the Joesixpack fallacy is a joke. A joesixpacker is to busy drinking and partying to vote. I think most Joesixpackers are among the millions that don't vote.

24. Here's your NK and his score: 2.77 (Almost third grade!)
For : "The Bush Admin thought they could walk on water. Turns out they could barely get around street puddles. What a bunch of flaming idiots."

Kerry sounding like Kerry is imo a bad thing to some extent. Point: smart people already like him & everyone else (80%?) can't understand him. I myself find him a bit windy.

26. Okay, from here on in I'll write the Dummies Guide to KerrySpeak
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 09:40 PM by TayTay
just send me a PM and I'll do a translation whenever a Press release comes up. (OMG, I sense a career change coming up.) Want me to translate it into my native Bostonese as well? (Bush, you mother******, get your g*ddamn arse back to Afghanistan and friggin bite the f**king head off that f**king bastid bin Laden. What are you retahded?) However, that sort of speech is less refined, aloof and reserved than one normally expects from us lofty Mass-souls.

BTW, I'm live-blogging Kerry's speech this weekend at Faneuil Hall on Homeland Security and such. I will attempt to be clear in my reporting as such.

33. Look, Carl Sagan had equal--if not more--brainpower than Kerry
and he managed to make himself understood (and thus, appealing) to a very broad group of people. People from broad age, education, income and, yes, snobbsihness levels.

"Play to your audience" is public speaking rule number one for a reason.

It's so easy, even a genius can do it.

13. Correction Tay - Kerry's been attacking Bush about Tora Bora since Jan2002
He received NO BACKUP from any Dems while he tried to get it onto the media radar for 6months on his own. Some Dems even sided publicly with Bush over Kerry on Tora Bora throughout 2002-3.

14. That's true
Several Democrats disavowed Kerry's words in early 2003 when he said that perhaps we needed a 'regime change at home.' They thought he was being too harsh. I believe it on Tora Bora too! A lot of people saw the high approval rates Bush still had in 2002 and decided that saying anything critical was wrong. Sigh!

28. Also, I don't think the Tora Bora line Kerry repeated so often
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 12:07 AM by karynnj
that I think we could all recite it in unison is as complicated as the algorythm suggests. The algorythym rates sentences with long words like Afghanistan and Outsource up. The sentence is also extremely long - but the fact is it flowed and had a cadence that made it very easy to remember. That it encapslated so many points is incredible. It was not a long complicated sentence for the sake of being long and complicated. All those who heard knew Bush screwed up in Afghanistsn and they knew precisely who. (that outsourcing was another sore issue was just a bonus.)

The other thing is I heard several people in the media start to speak of "outsourcing" this or other military actions. It was NOT the usual word to us - that it was stolen indicated it was good.

Note the VERY FIRST poster - immediately referenced a line from nearly 2 years ago. Tell me again why that was too complicated. It seemed memorable to me.

Disclaimer: I once worked in a research group that upon getting this grading mechanism immediately misused it - trying to get the highest possible score on the paragraph we had to write for internal presentations. 17 was about as high as we got!

Can't say the words incompetent or disastrous enough. Good stuff.

I'd like him to find a way to say that these guys are endangering our country with their oversimplifications, arrogance, exaggerations, incompetence, and blind ideology. Plain language. And reference Iraq/Katrina-like disasters in every policy area. Tell us you've had enough. Tell America it's time to get checks and balances back because this group of crooks and liars have driven the car into the ditch.

Don't hold back. Plain language.
